Auction/Keeper Baseball League - Redux: Anyone who remembers last year's saga knows that the league didn't happen due to a little thing call child birth on draft day. A list of the people who signed up last year is inside and all of those folks have first opportunity to try giving it another shot.

I'm tired of H2H fantasy baseball. Auction/keeper sounds more difficult. I'll take my place on the waiting list. Thank you, come again!

I'm in if you'll have me. I love keeper leagues, and if I'm in here, I'm out in the other league to open a spot for someone over there.

posted by wfrazerjr at 10:08 PM on February 17, 2007

Yeah, I'm in. Will you post the rules again? Are we going to do AL-only? I'd also drop out of the other one to open up a spot for someone else.

posted by bperk at 08:40 AM on February 18, 2007

Definitely post the rules again, please?

posted by jerseygirl at 09:23 AM on February 18, 2007

I'll dig them up and make a google doc. Last year we said AL-only, I've done a lot more research so we might think about going mixed, I wasn't confident we could do that last year. I've been reaching out to some other bloggers for more advice. Definitely want to refine what we started with last year.

posted by YukonGold at 09:31 AM on February 18, 2007

i'll drop out of the other one as well if someone leaves their spot in this league.

I'd also like to see the rules, but would put my name on the waiting list.

Me too on the waiting list.

posted by hawkguy at 02:23 PM on February 18, 2007

I've done a lot more research so we might think about going mixed, I wasn't confident we could do that last year. We'd have to double the league size, but it sounds like that might be in order anyway.

posted by yerfatma at 02:30 PM on February 18, 2007

or maybe there's a need for two (one AL, one NL). May be more interest this year already.

Last year's league rules There are still some kinks to work out, but gets the point across.

posted by YukonGold at 05:58 PM on February 18, 2007

You know what would be really cool, that I've always wanted to try and which seems totally doable given the reaction in here: create two leagues, one AL and one NL. Hold two separate drafts. End the season sometime before the end of the season (a week, 10 days -- or two full pitching rotations, or two weeks, whatever). Then create a head-to-head scenario for the winner of each league a sort of World Series. In the age of Yahoo fantasy sports, there has to be some way to do this without leaping through too many hoops. The one holdup would be that you might need a second "League President" of sorts to keep order without overwhelming the Commissioner. And to follow up my suggestion with a totally lame bail, I can't volunteer for that presidential duty -- I am a new Commissioner in my other keeper league, and my work this summer is going to make that a stretch in itself. I hate extending the level of organizational difficulty without offering any assistance, but I figured it couldn't hurt to at least throw in out there. The more fantasy baseball emulates real baseball, the more I like it.

posted by The Crafty Sousepaw at 07:25 PM on February 18, 2007

Also, who is that BallpeenPro? You can probably take him off your list. Anyone who would tout himself a "pro" probably knows ditka about baseball.

posted by The Crafty Sousepaw at 07:49 PM on February 18, 2007

Yeah, that guy was a jerk.

posted by The_Black_Hand at 05:20 AM on February 19, 2007

Yukon, I'll politely bow out. I'm just a bit too busy to put the proper time into this, and I am involved in one keeper league already. Best of luck to everyone.

posted by mbd1 at 09:11 AM on February 19, 2007

You know what would be really cool I agree. That would be cool. Realistically we'll probably have trouble getting to 24 willing participants, but should we get that high I'm all for it. We'd probably have to come up with some clunky apparatus for running it but it's possible. Right now we've got 4 confirmations from last year and 6 with new interest. We'll see how it goes as the rest trickle in. btw, it's times like this I wish there was a way to leave messages for other users on login. Has that ever been discussed?

Last year people discussed co-managing if anyone is interested in that. Doesn't look like we'll find an additional 9 people to be able to have one AL and one NL league, although I'd love it if we could. Here is an updated rules doc with changes to the waiver system. We will place a limit on the number of waiver pickups you can make in a season. I'm also unsure of whether we should complicate the contracts with the whole "guaranteed" thing. Does anyone have questions about rules? I'm trying to simplify a couple areas (waivers/contracts) but I think we'll stick with an AL-only format. Doing a mixed league really brings a lot of difficult factors in the the keeper scenarios.

Defintely just an initial suggestion based on feedback that Sundays are good, but the day after St. Pats is bad (from another thread). If that's not true, the week before is a possibility.

We should bring cigars, either way.

For those of you who think, hey, a cat's gotta be easier, less hormonal, fewer late night cravings, less nagging, etc., yeah, no, that's not true. Stick to women, guys. Trust me. We should bring cigars, either way. I'm planning on drafting some Cubans.

posted by The Crafty Sousepaw at 08:12 PM on February 22, 2007

AllUrBasesBelong2Us is officially on board. However, the March 25th would not work for me, as I'm finishing up a major three-day show in Toronto that day. The 18th is tough also, as I have Ron Duguay Phil Goyette signing in-store that day. I can try to beat it home, though. We should bring cigars, either way. In that same vein, I'd like to announce that I've hired Monica Lewinsky to handle all publicity and media relations for the team.

We've lost steam on the draft date here. If we can't get a consensus date we may have to scrap the auction portion and retool for a traditional draft with keepers.

posted by YukonGold at 06:47 AM on February 27, 2007

Auction drafting is so much more fun than rotation drafting, it would be a shame to drop it. It totally removes the purpose of most of the rules, too. Yuke, why don't you just give a list of 3-5 dates that you think will be popular and allow all interested parties, including wait-list candidates, to weigh in on each date. If you can get 12 on any of the dates, go with that. Maybe people on the A-list who aren't available on the best date can team up with wait-listers who can make it. The rules need to stipulate a concrete date for future drafts. My league has had about a 99% attendance rate for the auction by letting everyone know that it will always be the first Saturday after Opening Day. Everyone seems to keep the date open.

posted by The Crafty Sousepaw at 07:33 AM on February 27, 2007

Agreed.I definitely don't want to lost the auction thing, we just have an extra set of obstacles all being remote. Please vote on which of these times will work for you. #1 Sunday March 18, 6:00pm EST #2 Sunday March 25, 6:00pm EST #3 Sunday April 1, 6:00pm EST #4 Tues/Wed March 20/21 8:00 pm EST (two nights) #5 Tues/Wed March 27/28 8:00 pm EST (two nights)

How long are we going to go on the weeknights? If we don't go over two hours, I can be available any of those times.

posted by bperk at 09:00 AM on February 27, 2007

Live auction, keeper league, 25 player active roster, 17 player reserve roster: takes about six hours. Our roster numbers here are smaller than my other league, but we are drafting full rosters, with no keepers filling spots, and the thing is being done online (I have no idea if this fact will make it shorter or longer). If the auctioneer is good at keeping things moving (and everyone is pretty much prepared) I'm guessing the whole draft process will require four to five total hours. Since the reserve part is a rotation draft, it can easily be done off-line at a separate time (maybe even as a locker room thread), which would reduce the online draft time by a bit. I wouldn't count on less than four hours. Additional consideration: my other league allows each team three one-minute "time outs" during the draft, which stop the auctioneer so that people can give additional consideration to the current player on the block or adjust draft strategy going forward. Teams rarely use all three, but these might be useful in a league that has a lot of rookies. The downside, of course, is that it can add up to 36 minutes to the draft time. Just something to mull over. I'm pretty sure any of those five time slots work for me.

posted by The Crafty Sousepaw at 09:18 AM on February 27, 2007

How long are we going to go on the weeknights? I was personally thinking no later than 11:00. Live auction, keeper league, 25 player active roster, 17 player reserve roster: takes about six hours. That's good to know. We'll only be auctioning 20 players so hopefully we can stay within that time frame. Since the reserve part is a rotation draft, it can easily be done off-line at a separate time (maybe even as a locker room thread) I was definitely thinking that we'd use a locker room thread for that.
