I would love for the Jets to win, especially if the Colts win. I really do not think Brady is a baby, it just sounded good.

Hey! I'm tied for second! Hurray! The Consolation Bowl: St. Louis by 3 The Moss vs. Rolling Stones Bowl: Eagles by 14 The Chad Pennington Arm-in-a-Terrible-Towel-Sling Bowl: Stillers by 17 The Bill Belichick Improvisation Bowl: Pats by 3, thanks to Adam V., setting up everybody to believe that the Pats can't possibly make it through another round (ooh, shades of '02!)

Are points cumulative, or are we starting from zero in the next round?

posted by lil_brown_bat at 05:36 PM on January 10, 2005

Cumulative. We gotta crown somebody at the end, just like last year.

I'm tempted to go out and put money on all the teams I didn't pick here. That way, if I lose my pride here, I get some cash. But if I win here, it'd feel like I'd bought the championship. Hmm.

if everyone remaining needs some help making their picks then look at mine and pick the opposite. your success is assured. NFC Atlanta by 4 Philly by 7 AFC Pittsburgh by 7 NE by 3 well, looks like i'd have all the home teams winning which means those two 8-8 teams are gone. and if it goes the opposite way then vegas is prolly out lots of money. or not.

A sincere apology to both of you. I really should have actually, y'know, looked it up first. Also posting after a boozy lunch might not have been the best course of action. You may say I'm a dreamer, But (apparently) I'm not the only one.

My mistake; I should've named it the Wide Left Bowl. Also, nobody picked Pittsburgh by 3. Nobody!

posted by DrJohnEvans at 07:28 PM on January 15, 2005

Nobody picked Steelers to win by only three, interesting. A pox on Doug Brien, though, and perhaps Herm Edwards (or whoever called the last few Jets plays in regulation) for not actually trying to gain a few yards to get the ball closer. Or even a fecking first down.

posted by billsaysthis at 07:33 PM on January 15, 2005

If only the Jets had seen the footage from last week, of Schotts concentrating on the kick, then missing and losing in overtime. Oh. Hang on...

So on the SpoFi line: Atlanta is the 68% favourite. Philadelphia has a 53% edge. Pittsburgh is the overwhelming 89% favourite. Indianapolis has a 53% edge.

posted by DrJohnEvans at 07:50 PM on January 15, 2005

word, billsaysthis. I've been defending Herman Edwards to my friends for literally years, but it's getting harder and harder to do that. What was he, high? He's managed the last two minutes of regulation in each of the last two weeks like Ray Charles driving F1. Euch.

posted by chicobangs at 08:02 PM on January 15, 2005

Holy crap, Dunn is going to end up with 800 yards of rushing tonight if the Hams can't stop him.

posted by NoMich at 08:27 PM on January 15, 2005

Well, THAT was certainly a nail biter! (rolls eyes) Now if we can just get past Indy, I'm certainly less scared of big, bad, ol' Pittsburgh! Btw: nice graphsm NoMich. Reeeeal original. =)

posted by hincandenza at 10:38 PM on January 15, 2005

Chico, the blame is probably better directed at offensive coordinator Paul Hackett, who was never successful as a head coach (USC Trojans immediately preceeding Pete Carroll, Pittsburgh Steelers immediately preceeding Bill Cowher) and overrated as an OC (KC Chiefs, Jets).

Looks like trox is the big winner in this round. (I got a measly three points)

posted by lil_brown_bat at 08:24 PM on January 16, 2005

You may have gotten a measley 3 points this week, l_l_b, but at a glance, I think you may be number 2 (tee hee) overall.

posted by NoMich at 08:41 PM on January 16, 2005

Yep, tied with trox at 7 points, with jasonspaceman, MeatSaber, and rocketman right behind. Incidentally, is there a reason you get 2 points for nailing the spread exactly, as opposed to getting 1 point for picking an over/under on an official spread or total, or picking a spread/over/under yourself (i.e., "Steelers win by at least 14")?

posted by hincandenza at 09:16 PM on January 16, 2005

i think i may have to pull a constanza next round.

posted by goddam at 09:18 PM on January 16, 2005

Four points, although I think I should get a bonus point for being the closest to Atlanta's spread. (So I was off by 17. Who's counting?)

posted by DrJohnEvans at 09:19 PM on January 16, 2005

Thank god the NYJ missed those field goals, otherwise I'd have been completely shut out this round. Yeah me!

posted by grum@work at 09:20 PM on January 16, 2005

Incidentally, is there a reason you get 2 points for nailing the spread exactly... I have no idea why I came up with that. This is reason number one you don't want me to run these things. Nobody else stepped up just before the first weekend and I paniced. And for that, I apologize. I want to start adding more options to predict for more points so that those with only a couple of points at this juncture will still have a chance to compete. I don't know what it'll be though.

posted by NoMich at 09:31 PM on January 16, 2005

I kinda like the purity of the one-point-per-pick game, with the two-for-spread thrown in to keep things fresh. Of course, this is football, so we like things to get as complicated as possible. :) Awesome last-minute job, NoMich.

posted by DrJohnEvans at 10:05 PM on January 16, 2005

Yes, awesome job NoMich; the graphs are sharp, the results up-to-date... huzzah!

posted by hincandenza at 11:21 PM on January 16, 2005

Wow, am I still in first overall? I picked all four winners but no spread points this time. WHERE'S THE DAMN NEW TABLE ALREADY!!!!
