***SPOFI LOCKER ROOM INTERVIEW #15*** billsaysthis: "there was mention of moi at one point but i am too modest to use capital letters in making this assertion." Interview #15! It's been four months since my last interview ... wha, that sounds like a confessional. I’m just happy to be back. Let's get on with it, shall we? Jersey boy, billy boy, billsaysthis!

Q1. bill, what's up with that nickname?

Good grief. It looks like I have outdone myself. Another stealth interview that the interviewee didn't know about. Except that this time, even the peanut gallery doesn't show up. Where is everybody?

posted by worldcup2002 at 07:38 PM on March 30, 2004

I'm here! But it seems that SpoFi itself has been rather barren recently. It's like everyone tuckered themselves out over Todd Bertuzzi.

No, no, jgirl no Wigginisms!!!!!! Please, give me a break, after three years I finally have a job and so weekdays no more clicking into the site every other hour. Anyway, to answer, it is a result of my sense of humor when I was looking for a URL a few years ago. billlazar.com was taken (though it came free last year and I grabbed it then), so I tried to think of something memorable that would go well with a blog and, given the enormity of my self-esteem, it had to have Bill in it somewhere.

I've eaten barbecue chicken at his house and marveled at his Tivo. And I;ve known about the job for weeks now. I figured that our being in the same timezone (plus bill's never being at a loss for opinions - heh) would help the interview go smoothly. And so it goes.

2. bill, how and when did you find out about SpoFi? What made you join? What keeps you coming back?

posted by worldcup2002 at 12:34 PM on March 31, 2004

SpoFi was mentioned many times on MeFi and after having my head pounded with it enough times I came by for a look. Never left, never leaving. You all are way too much fun and who else can I argue over 'real' football with? Plus make all the snarky comments without retribution? BTW, Wednesday is my day off--the new gig is part-time for now--and I'm watching the US beating Poland 1-0 as half time is about a minute or so away. DaMarcus had a beautiful 5 hole goal off a feed from Josh Wolff which Jerzy Dudek had no way to block. Hope JZ makes a better show at the weekend for LFC!

posted by billsaysthis at 01:24 PM on March 31, 2004

WTF is a "5 hole goal"?

posted by squealy at 03:36 PM on March 31, 2004

squealy: a goal between the legs (though I didn't know they used that term in soccer/football....I thought it was from hockey)

posted by smithers at 03:38 PM on March 31, 2004

OK, for future reference: between the legs is the five hole? "I got to second base and figured 'what the hell' and went straight for the 5 hole goal."

posted by dusted at 03:42 PM on March 31, 2004

I guess "nutmeg" would have been more appropriate for soccer (football!), but that tends to refer to a slick dribbling move, rather than a shot on goal. But maybe we just say he "shot it right between the keeper's legs" and leave it at that, OK? It's just getting too hot and heavy in here. But seriously, folks ...

Q3. So congrats on your new job. Tell us a little more about it. How does it feel to be back at work?

posted by worldcup2002 at 04:06 PM on March 31, 2004

I did carry the 5 hole thing over from hockey, seemed appropriate in our 'if this is Wednesday, it must be soccer' kind of group. A little BASEketball-ish, eh? Work. Damn, to be honest I'd just as soon not have had to go back. Actually feels good at times and annoyingly in the way at others. I am the new product manager at Intransa. We make really big storage systems, so, for instance, if you wanted to put an MP3 of every song released on any commercial label anywhere in the world every on one drive, you could probably use our stuff. But mainly companies use it for mission important (rather than mission critical) data stores like the Exchange database or near-line backups. We're small but growing (and hiring, so let me know) and the place seems to have a good number of smart people beside me. I've never worked in storage before but that didn't stop my boss from hiring me. I think my willingness to come on for half-time at first was a key factor in his decision but I have been assured so far, so good and, by the way, can I work more hours starting next week. I said sure but no Wednesdays at least until May. Thanks for your kind words, WC, now back to trashing me, eh?

posted by smithers at 10:31 PM on March 31, 2004

Sorry dusted, if you asked about Windows, Linux or Solaris the answer would be yes but there is no iSCSI initiator for OS X and apparently Apple is not going to write one any time soon. Maybe, if you're a programmer, you can port the one that runs on Linux? I'm sure my bosses would be happy (though not give you money happy) and maybe Apple would be too, though that's harder to be sure of.

Did I mention that the list price of the smallest configuration is almost $60,000? American dollars. But you could store a lot of five hole pics on it for sure, that's about two terabytes of disk.

Although I don't know a lot about computers, I could probably help around the office somehow. I could maybe lift stuff or something. You ever notice how there's all these old people in offices? They always need help to lift their stuff, right? I mean, as long as it's not that heavy kind of stuff. 'Cause that heavy stuff's hard to lift. If not, I could probably file or something though. I mean, as long as you're not going to be a dick about the alphabet and all. "Alphabet." Man, I hate that song. A-B-C-D-whatever, dude. Anyway, keep me in mind if anything comes up.

BC, I have no idea but when I've asked about this topic that company does not get mentioned. Fun? You mean surfing the web and watching TV aren't enough to fill a life? LOL, ROFL but I have not played an organized or even pick up game of any sport since being forced to do so in high school. I was doing some bike riding until certain issues got in the way but I do work out at the gym 3-4 times a week. Watching sports on TV is pretty high up there, though. What else can I say in answering this question and still keep within the bounds of the proposed FCC guidelines?

I have lost just about 60 pounds now on the Atkins Plan, plus the aforementioned gym time. Been on it for 19 months today and am more than happy to stay on forever. The food we eat is fine with me and, in general, satisfies my taste needs especially now that major food companies are starting to produce low carb products (ie, JIF, Ragu, Ben & Jerry's). Some people claim that all the meat/protein will mess with one's cholesterol but I was just tested (again) and came in fine, on track to extremely healthy when I lose the remaining 30 pounds or so. Has it changed my life? Well, no more Hawaiian King bread makes Bill Sad but if I want to be healthy instead of decrepit later on, losing the extra 90-100 pounds is a must. JG, when they stopped making real pinball machines, I lost interest. Just don't have the hand-eye coordination or the bloodlust today's games require. I played Doom or Quake II, I forget which, at my buddy's place a few times but it just made me ill to do all that killing and I would rather watch sports than pretend to play them.

Gary, good thing I left my tea over on the table because I would have ruined my laptop reading your comment! Oy! Sports: NFL EPL MLS NHL (I also like listening to the Sharks games on radio if in the car while they're happening) AFL - Aussie rules football NBA/NCAA men's basketball (playoffs/tourney only) The first three are in pretty close proximity and soccer's gaining all the time. BBall seems to be falling off the edge, barely watched this year's tourney at all. I only watch SportsCenter when at the gym, which means subtitle reading and no other highlight/news shows though I've been thinking about the FSW EPL Review and Preview shows. SportsFilter is my #1 website, then Soccer.net and occasionally the Singapore Times Footy page. For some reason the BBC Sports will not give me the soccer or EPL only RSS feeds, so screw'em. ESPN in a pinch.

My site is mainly the blog plus a few other things that interested me, like Springsteen, upcoming movie news and my poetry. Also my wife's blog is hosted there though we do own a domain name for her if the decision is made to do that but for now she isn't interested. I write it because I enjoy writing and this is a good outlet for that itch. It also gave me something to do and a sense of accomplishment for the three+ years I didn't work, as I started it a few weeks after leaving Sun. Most of what I write about are things that I see in life and strike me as worth remembering or commenting on. So movies, sports, TV, politics, business and technology. And the occasional personal stuff and shoutouts to friend's blogs. So I guess another part of why is that it feeds my ego to put opinions out there for the world to see and be amazed by. No one should read it, other than my wife and parents but some people apparently do and I hope people find it of some value, preferably entertaining. Grum even made a nice colorful blogsticker though I'm not sure how to best use it yet. If any of you have personal sites and would like a link, BTW, just let me know.

its not for everyone. you either like it or don't. this movie, however, was vastly different than any of his previous films. i need to see before sunrise, nemo. i didnt realize they were making a sequel.

posted by jerseygirl at 04:03 PM on April 02, 2004

is jerseygirl (the movie) comparable to chasing amy (in scope if not subject matter)? before sunrise, is an acquired taste (read:talking head movie). the script is clean and unpretentious (unlike hawke), the pace of the film really moves (which is interesting for a love story). and the performances by hawke and delpy feel natural (strange considering I don't like the majority of their other work). having said that, its not for everybody. if you like before sunrise, you've got to see night on earth. jim jarmusch (also a genius) is mentioned as the filmmaker who's style was simplistic enough to convince kevin smith that he could make movies (referenced from spike, mike, slackers & dykes - an interesting read about "independent cinema" from 1984-1994, if you've got the time. I'm about to read the follow-up). rocketman - although smith has problems with moving the camera, he definitely knows how to tell a story.

Just for the record, since this is my interview LOL, I am a big Kevin Smith fan though have not yet seen the new movie. The thought of JLo in it is almost, but not quite, enough to deter me. Also, our Jersey Girl is from Boston and sadly we've never met, or I would post her photo for you WC. Springsteen, man, now we are talking! He has been my musical god for almost 30 years now, ever since Mike Appel snuck an early version of (the song, not the album) Born to Run out of the studio and gave it to a few friendly radio stations (WNEW, WMMR, one down in Philly...). I heard those blasting guitars, the diving drums and bass underneath and it was all over. When I heard the rest of the album--bought at the Sam Goody's in the mall across the street on the first day it was there--I thought it was so good it didn't come off the turntable for three months. Literally. The next few years were a bit lean due to his legal troubles though I was entranced by his shows broadcast on radio from the Bottom Line and one of the clubs on Sunset Strip whose name escapes me and then Darkness at the Edge of Town arrived. OMG! For me it was even better than BTR, darker, meatier, lyrics more direct and apocalyptic. Was there anything else released in '78/'79? I could barely tell you. By The River I was at USC and annoying the record store clerk every day after the poster went up until the album came in. Wonderful, amazing, and TWO DISCS! Talk about going net. Then he and the E Streeters made a six night stand at the LA Arena, across campus from me, and I was there three of them. The next year they put on five more shows, including the infamous Halloween event, which I missed dammit, but I was there twice more. Is this enough explanation or do you want more? Exit 145, I guess, since you had to take 280 up a few miles to get to my town. Later on I lived sort of near exit 142. Now I live in Cali which does not seem to understand that highway exits require numbers.

Our first anniverary is coming up on May 10, you do the math. We met in the MSN SF chat room back in Sep., 2001, probably a few days before 9/11. Let me tell you, the chat room was something else that day! We had our first date the night before Halloween (dinner at Cha Cha Cha's in the Haight, a walk in the drizzle and the Peanuts Halloween special at a buddy's movie night, then decided we were in love for Valentine's Day (more or less), she moved in here end of August and the wedding was last May. You might chuckle about us meeting online, though I guess that's more and more common since Vivian and I met, but we are one of about six or seven couples to either get married or live together from the group of regulars from the SF room at that time and many of us still hang together online or at the occasional party. Let's just say its more frequent than some regional MeFi meetup ;)

Ufez, you've been begging to treat lilnemo like a dog?

I vote you go Old Skool and interview RCADE! It'll be like interviewing Dad.

Hey, my dad is cool guy who would make a great interview as long as the topic is not sports.

Goddam: taylor ham sounds quite a bit like country ham down here in North Carolina. It's a disgusting salt lick and my old lady can't get enough of it. I guess it ain't a trip to Bojangles without ordering a country ham biscuit.

I met my wife online in the 90's, too. She said, "I thought you were at work, you bastard!" Hahahahahahahahahahahaha. No, seriously, it was nothing like that.

Since rcade hasn't turned up in this interview, I'm going to go with lilnemo. I want to minimize my recent tendency toward stealth interviews. I will, however, put up a little ad calling for rcade to make himself available. lilnemo, let's go!

And thanks, Bill, for helping me to get back in the interview mode.

I'd just like to say this is the 100th post of this interview.
