I hope no one minds the FPP regarding my SportsFilter column. There's been discussion on using FPPs to draw attention to the columns since they are often missed on The Sidelines. Of course, I'm aware that it looks pretty egotistic to begin FPPing columns with my very own. If enough members object, I'll not only delete the post, but I'll banish my sorry, self-centered ass from SportsFilter, not to mention google-bomb myself until I'm the laughing-stock of the Internet.

Hahahahaha. Good one, SF. I'll take one soccer column, too, sunny-side up.

I've got no problem with it all, as I previously mentioned. It might become a problem if we begin getting two or three columns a day or something, but they're fairly infrequent at the time, and I for one appreciate the highlighting of a new one. I don't really see any abuse here, and the only time that I would object is if someone said "hey, I wrote a column on my site, would you link to that?". And you two jokers can write your own columns, you know.

corpse, if you go to the post link, you'll find the submit a column link.

It might be advantageous to add a submit a column link on the columns page. Say, somewhere up high, like maybe right below the title "SportsFilter Columns". Believe you me, column submissions will increase at a rate of 200%.

Sorry jacknose, but I vote for the punishments you outlined above. Plus throw in tarring and feathering followed by drawing and quartering.

run them as FPPs. no punishment needed.

Personally, I was leaning towards letting people promote their own columns on the front page. However, after several people objected when I suggested it, I'm wondering if it would be better to find other ways to call attention to them. For example: 1. Putting a comment count with each column in the sidebar, so that people know when one has led to an active discussion. 2. Linking to a columnist's past columns on user pages. 3. Adding support for mug shots like the one I put on the Sorenstam piece, making them look more like columns on newspaper Web sites.

I like worldcup2002's suggestion to add a link on the column page and rcade's suggestions. I don't really object to announcing the columns, but announcements should be treated differently than posts. They could be a different format (maybe with border and/or background) to make them visually distinctive, and they probably should only link to what they're announcing, and not have a separate page of their own with comments. But then the sidebar posts already do all of these things.

In the sidebar, you could make the announcements about columns in bright orange. And make the table cell background black. And make the text blink. Definitely blink. Oh yeah.

I liked it.

I'm with wc2k2, of course, but could you add an appropriate for the tone of the column smiley as well? :p

And can we have background music?

Yeah, something like "Tears of a Clown" in synth-harpsichord. YEAH!

Bill, you're a pox upon the internet and the sports world in general. A Devils fan and an emoticon user as well? May God have mercy on your soul.
