What is up with the College football post?! I thought we agreed not to post gargantuan posts?!

I like the college football post. I don't mind the long posts as long as it's packed with good info, and all of them have been good so far.

I had to decrease my fonts size because of that post. I'd like to see them a little shorter, but it was a great wrap-up post, good job thescoop.

I don't think anyone is saying that the posts shouldn't be so long and content worthy. I think the main point of the conversation is to put, say, the first paragraph on the front page and the rest as a (More Inside) as the first comment. All of the recaps have been great so far. I hope they stick for the long run.

My personal opinion is that all but the first paragraph should be posted as a comment. I appreciate the work that's going into these posts, but they make it impossible to scan the links on the front page.

Oh, stop it, guys. I think that, as a Beat Reporter myself, and as a fan of Barry White, I speak for all of us pseudo-bloggers when I say: [cue ol' funky disco love music] This beat reporting thing is a labor of love. Luuuv, baby. And when you put your love into labor, baby, you want to see your love up on the front page, baby. Not split in two, baby. Noooooo. So, let me give you all my love, sugar. Don't put it on the shelf, honey (or on two pages). 'Cause it's all about love, baby. Yeaaaah. [cue background vocals - "ooooooooooh" - and fade] That's what I'm talkin' 'bout.

Masturbation is a labor of love too. Doesn't mean I want to see other people doing it.

rcade, you'd pay good money to see Anna Kornikova center court at Roland Garos practicing some self love.

Yeah, I know I'm being critical here, but I do want to say that these have been utterly great, for /all/ the sports. I don't mean to squash anyone's labor of love, trust me. I just want each one not utterly seizing the entire front page.

But perhaps the very prominence of the wrap-up serves a purpose, as it makes it so that anyone intending to start a new [insert sport here] thread will see that there is already a thread which address the sport.

I don't want it to do that, joehyuk, otherwise we'll have nothing other than these mega-posts (since basically every sport is covered by one of them.)

My bad. I have to start checking the Locker Room more frequently. I'd like to suggest that maybe we just post "NFL Report Week 6 (inside)" or some such, and then have the whole body of the text in the comments section. Or do you think this would lead to double posts? I think it would make the front page a lot nicer to look at. Although I have to admit that I find worldcup2002 oddly persuasive.

Why one or two of the most impressive links, then a nice [more inside]? Doesn't clutter the front page that way.

Should read "why not."

djacobs, I feel the same way. I suppose if we had thirty posts a day it would be difficult to go through, but I like coming to SportsFilter and having something to read. I suppose I could always click to the thread, but it's nice to see a new splash of text that someone has worked on. I imagine that this will be an ongoing discussion.

djacobs, that thread was referring to people putting 3000+ word posts on their personal blogs. I don't care what anyone does with their personal blogs. But community blogs are much different. I think a lot of stuff gets lost in the bohemith posts. I've already mentioned that I'm for the (more inside). If I'm in the minority, I can deal with that. I'm not going to leave SpoFi or anything.

So are we doing the (more inside) way or what? The NFL post today took up the entire front page for me. I don't care either way we do it, let's just get somewhat uniform.

Yeah, took up the entire front page for me too. Glad I bothered to scroll down or I wouldn't have noticed the college basketball post.

is it really necessary to post a blurb about every game on the front page? sure the thread can open for discussion about every game, but the front page round-up seems like it should highlight the top stories. i don't read sportsfilter to find out the ravens won 13-12.

I did my one-liner (yemv). How you like me now? ;-p

That NFL post was complete indulgence on owillis's part. He's not capable of anything else, though (that's why we love him).

I already miss worldcup's gargantuan FPPs. Hey, isn't nice to be actually having debates about SportsFilter? (One day I'll regret this statement.)
posted by jacknose at 03:18 PM on November 25, 2002
Hey, if owillis gets to do it, then we all should, no? Either way, it doesn't matter to me: Full-page or one-liner, I still gots the goods.

I think when there's a problem with too many posts, or weird annoying spofites who post too much or too obnoxiously (BESIDES ME - LETS GO MO) - then let's revisit this?
posted by djacobs at 08:19 PM on November 25, 2002
Well, I'm not sure anyone actually agreed to it, but maybe we can continue and finalize the discussion (one way or the other) in this thread. :)
