That would be me. I look forward to getting some (or ANY!) CDs from the rest of my group.

I'm in. My musical inspiration this year was old school reggae, so I'm thinking that's what I'm gonna do.
But I'm open to suggestions.
posted by cjets at 12:43 PM on January 19, 2010
My first suggestion would be just to avoid the particular FPP that annoys you. If you don't like reading about the intersection of religion and sports, avoid that thread. There are plenty of other threads for you to read and comment on.
As far as the argument on the merits, one of the founding principles of this country is the separation of church and state. I would think that a conservative would respect that.
The state, in this case, is represented by the football coach, and I would assume that many of us would know the power and influence a coach would have over his student athletes, who are still teenagers.
Even if the coach merely suggested it the trip rather than ordered it, it's still inappropriate.
If you want to disagree or argue the merits, let's have at it. But if it is too upsetting for you to do so, then see my first suggestion.
And by the way, I'm the one that brought up the ACLU in the thread. I'm a card carrying member of the ACLU and proud of it, even when they defend despicable people like the Nazis in Skokie.

It seems that there is a consensus about certain types of comments which are clearly thread pissing (i.e. "soccer is a stupid sport" or "this is a stupid post"). But negative comments about a players such as Favre or Moss are not necessarily thread pissing. It depends, as Dyams said, on the quality of the post. And, it seems to me, it's just too subjective to try and codify the difference between negative posts and trolling except in the most basic way. A Brett Favre fan might find some of the posts about Favre to be trolling. But if the posts are well written and raise good points, why can't the poster express his negative view of Favre without it being called thread pissing?
posted by cjets at 03:24 PM on March 05, 2008
But, meantime, in the Favre retirement thread, it seemed to me to be an example of pissing to hear the snark about his failings as an athlete and person. Everybody has an opinion. Why can't I say I don't agree or like yours. Or to maybe point out that this isn't the time. I'm in total agreement up until that last line, which is a perfect segue into my two cents (so thanks, THX). If Favre's retirement or Randy Moss re-signing is the topic of the FPP, then why a poster has issues with Favre or Moss certainly seems to be on-topic to me. Other posters can and will challenge that opinion but isn't that the whole point of the site? For example, I'm a fan of Favre, but the fact that he refused to mentor Aaron Rodgers is a good point. And one not likely mentioned in a forty post eulogy to Favre.

obscure releases of...The Who. Folkways, I smell a separate swap if you're game. I've got plenty of bootlegs, er, live recordings of The Who if you're interested. Also, my musical taste began in the sixties, as did most of yours but if you can't move past that, you're missing some truly seminal work (Punk and Alternative - and those are genres, Grandma and Grandpa, not bands).

Chick Hearn (how can I be the first person to be mentioning him?) - the voice of the Lakers Ralph Kiner (you did say favorites, not best.) He was a favorite because of not in spite of his spectacular malapropisms. And Kiner's Korner Marv Albert - The voice of the Knicks and the Rangers for over 30 years Marty Glickman - Marv Albert's mentor and broadcaster for the Jets, Giants, Knicks and Rangers during his career. Glickman was also robbed of a gold medal when that hitler loving bitch Avery Brundage (may he rot in hell) replaced him on the 1936 US Olympic team John Davidson - Rangers color commentator - Like Kiner, a personal favorite. A few I really dislike: Vin Scully - A true professional. But I've always felt he didn't like the Mets so I don't like him. Al Michaels - He had me (and several friends) thrown out of a dog park in L.A. so he could film something so Fuck him. Johnny Most - Worst voice in radio. He always sounded like he just gargled broken glass

cjets - do you have a Chad Pennington jersey? I have that England national team training shirt... I do but Eli's sounds better than mine. An NFL baseball style jersey? Okay, now we've seen it all. Apocalypse at eleven. An x-mas gift from my mom. Past gifts have included a Jets Tie, a 6 foot inflatable Jets figure for my lawn, Jets underwear and a Jets Santa Claus. I'm just waiting for the Jets condoms.

I wouldn't mind a Celtic Football or Liverpool jersey if anyone has one and is willing to trade. Me too. Any English football jersey. As long as it's swap meet day, I've got a Soviet Army coat and shirt that I got in Moscow by trading my blue jeans (no, not the ones I was wearing). And a Wayne Chrebet baseball jersey (don't ask).

cjets, I'll trade. Size? 4-12 team for a 3-13 team? Gastineau for Warner? Wistrom? Faulk? Can we trade draft picks too? The Faulk jersey could be interesting. I'm an XL. The Gastineau might be an L, I have to check. It was alot of years ago.

Also, I have to share this. I was at the Anne Frank house in Amsterdam about eight years ago. As you can imagine, it's a somber, quiet place. I was wearing my New York Jets hoodie staring at one of the exhibits when I hear someone whisper "Jets suck. Pats Rule. " I look up to see a guy wearing a Pats hat, grinning at me. I whispered some shit back to him. This went back and forth for a moment until we were Shushed by about twenty people in the room. Luckily we were able to continue our discussion later at the Bulldog over a, er, "beer."

Especially when you're 4-12 and the other team in your city is in the Super Bowl. And I've got LOTS of J-E-T-S jerseys if anyone wants to trade. Mark Gastineau anyone? Freeman Mcneil? First off, Nakeman, I realize that you had the argument with Elijahin, but you've been nothing but standup since then. So please stop worrying about it. Second, I don't want to nit pick about about misspelled words or improper grammar. We all do it occasionally. I know I do. But, as a general rule, when a post has enough misspelled words, grammar and punctuation errors that it becomes difficult for me to read, then it becomes a problem. Where to draw that line? I guess everyone has a different threshhold. I don't generally make a comment if this happens. But I do understand that the site is self-policed ("Hot Fuzz" as Weedy said) and expect there to be criticism from the site members. I'm not surprised that there was criticism here. For my own posts, I tend to rely heavily on my PREVIEW button for editing purposes. I take pride in what I post and do expect the same from others. As far as this specific situation, I have a lot of sympathy with anyone who has dyslexia. It's a bitch. And I hope Elijahin does come back.

My 16 y.o. daughter is a big fan of The Clash, Stiff Little Fingers and the Pistols. One can only hope. He has developed a real taste for The Police but that's because he thinks that they are the actual Police (as in the LAPD). We saw a cop the other day and he asked me if it was Sting.

I'd love to join but I sent my e-mail in three days late. And the only excuse I can offer is: Ignorance. So I throw myself on the mercy of the locker room spofi swappers. If chosen I promise to fill a CD with 70 minutes worth of balls to the wall 70's british punk (maybe some Nirvana and Green Day thrown in as well). Unless my son hijacks it in which case it might be ANARCHY IN THE UK followed by TWINKLE TWINKLE LITTLE STAR
posted by cjets at 03:42 PM on December 03, 2007
However, when I log on to SpoFi I almost always look only at FPP's with new comments. I'm much more likely to read them than a post that has only a few comments. Sometimes I'll come upon a post that I looked over earlier that has several comments saying how it is a fantastic link, which causes me to read it. If Spofi is adding a way to flag trolling members, why not also add a way to "star" (or otherwise "flag")a great FPP? There are some terrific FPP's that I have read (Michael Lewis' article on placekickers comes to mind) that I have nothing to add to, but found it to be a fabulous read. If it had a rating of four stars out of four (or something like that) wouldn't that be a way of indicating is worth the read without having to add a comment?
