240 nothing, jerseygirl! You can have #67 for a mere 67,000 dollars.

I would also be willing to play, with strict rules and a commish who enforces them literally without enforcing his or her personality or rooting interest on the league. The perfect commisioner to me would be a robot. We should get to vote on all trades, majority rules. Also, to avoid late season quits, it should be a keeper league - 8 players?

current unimplemented feature requests: collaborative RSS feed. This is by far the easiest of the above to implement as well.

What way DOES it work, djacobs? You create an environment where people can be comfortable regardless of their gender, and maybe people of different genders can get together and talk about sports. This means (where do I start... ?) not attacking people because their women, not posting about how hot a tennis player is, not posting images of giant penises, etc. Or not denying the existence of sexism. Chuck cash: That's different than saying that women know less than men about sports the fact of the matter is that women who know as much about sports as guys do are few and far between I'm not sure. It seems like spofi members are comfortable having a nearly all-male site. Carry on then.

Starfucker, it doesn't work that way. Look at the way people have treated jerseygirl in the last 12 months. Why would any woman in her right mind hang out here?
posted by djacobs at 12:06 PM on November 10, 2003
It's a sports site. It's going to be a predominantly male membership. I love JG and what she brings to the table, and I appreciate that she's willing to let some of our transgressions go. But sadly, the fact of the matter is that women who know as much about sports as guys do are few and far between. This is where I disagree. I know as many (more?) women who love sports as I do men. But most women don't feel comfortable in a place like sportsfilter where, say, an alleged rape victim is mocked because of the way she looks. There are many, many sports communties/chat rooms/message boards on line. Shouldn't sportsfilter look a little different than all the others? *Filter users tend to think of themselves as a little more "cutting edge," especially when it comes to changing the way people use the Internet. My original question was: Is Sportsfilter into being a boys only site, or is it a happy accident? Samsonov14 says it should be predominantly male because women know less about sports. I disagree.

We don't *need* to do this on Sportsfilter, so I'm really interested in shouting "Hey Pantheon." Not that I have anything against them. This would take me Perl and 30 minutes to set up, or money for a basic typepad account and 30 seconds. Mefi has a couple of off shoot communities, many of which server their members sub interests better that mefi. That's nothing against mefi, it's just that a big site can't be all things to all people.

I'd like to note that kobefilter is still available.

Never that good? Get outta here. I think maybe the decision to got to a *filter name was a bad one, although it was impossible to know at the time, because there are always going to be mefi comparisons. But check out frykitty's excellent mefi FAQ: http://frykitty.com/mefifaq/, especially the "Best of Mefi" column. Have any three threads on spofi approached this level of quality? Meanwhile the worst spofi threads and name calling is as bad if not worse than mefi's nadir.

Good point grum, what has happened to spofi? I guess it was never that good, but it's never been farther from intelligent dicussion as it is now. I'd point to the Kobe case as a turning point. I guess that's fine. Where's owillis? We haven't heard from him in a while.

I like the idea of quick-hit links in a sidebar; It doesn't have to be a remainder (or flux, which was my inspiration) sidebar - it can actually exist primarily in RSS/RDF/(N)echo (likely all three until one emerges as an accepted standard) - and then it can be read in a newsreader or read onto any website as a side bar.

i mostly guessed. The real bonus should be if you can guess who is going to trade up to where - I bet the Blazers end up with the #2 or #3 pick, for instance.

I feel like we could fight about stats, position assignments and trade buffers for ever. The league has been pretty smoothly run, and I'm happy that so many of the owners are so active.

cnnsi, cbs sportsline, foxsports, and the sporting news links. The spirit of the rule would be to force creativity. On the other hand, I haven't seen a ton of sporting news links around. There are many days when 50% or more of the links on the front page is espn. Imagine if 50% of the front page links on mefi were cnn, or the new york times.

I agree with jerseygirl - I think 2 people should make any trade they want, as long as it doesn't stink of collusion. It's fun to kibbutz. I actually think corpse should get Hunter back for free. In the same vein, the Mets should get Everett back.

You are giving too much. I thought you were going to get him back more or less for free, since you accidentally dropped him?

Yeah, I love the chart. I'm a little sad about the Yahoo's lag updating Dye to DL - I would've liked to have have kept a player I dropped, but I needed to pick up the Grabowsk-nik, who's going to tear up AL pitching. jade: clemens for zito?

I'm thinking of killing the Bernie for Delgado trade Why? This also seems even. I don't understand why you feel obligated to care if other people are making moves you disagree with. Should you have drafted for us all as well?

I'm not sure if you're serious or not. You know he was an all star only because they drew straws to see who would represent Tampa Bay... Also, why'd you pull back the Marrero trade? I would have pulled the trigger on that.

Obviosuly, because he's underrated. Jerseygirl, I'm just giving you an oppurtunity to "Buy Low, Sell High" and have Pedro on your tieam! How can you pass it up?

jerseygirl, I was trading you upside! And Higginson was injured, and will steal. And Pedro is much, much better than everyone except Randy Johnson. Anyway, yes, of course you're right. catfish, can I have mo?

A-rod is clearly the #1 pick, I agree. That "Bag of Oranges" was Bobby Higginson. And I'm not sure the gap between him & Manny is much more than the gap between Zito & Pedro. Pedro is *much* better than everyone, except Randy Johnson and maybe Mussina if he bounces back. I think. I will also send you some real oranges.
