Former NFL player Esera Tuaolo has told interviewers for Real Sports and ESPN the Magazine that he is gay, becoming one of the first former NFL players to out himself.

I'm amazed this is still an issue in pro team sports. Surely some pros already know they have gay teammates and don't care. I can't imagine anyone spending most of his time in gyms and other athletic settings and being shocked at the possibility that some of the other muscleheads might be gay.

Good for him. I'd imagine that it takes a lot of guts to do that. I always root for the underdogs in sports, like black quarterbacks and coaches in football, etc. It's a tough hill to climb for those guys, and I hope that the sports world will one day catch up with the rest of the planet as far as tolerence goes. I was reading a thread on Hockeysfuture.com tonight, and a guy was in the process of trying to not be banned for making homophobic comments. Grow up. There are people of all types out there, and we have to get used to it. Or else we go back to an all-white NBA. Disclaimer: I'm not gay, but I'd probably be better off if I was. Times being hit on at a bar by a girl: 0. Times being hit on by a man at a bar: 3. I'm pretty sure gay guys have better taste than women.
