We might lose the game, but we'll win the fistfight afterwards.

We might lose the game, but we'll win the fistfight afterwards. Was it not Toronto's own King Clancy who once said, "If you can't beat 'em in the alley, you can't beat 'em on the ice"?

Then reversed to, "If you can't beat us on the ice, beat us off."

That, slightly modified, is one of my top ten all time favorite college hockey cheers. Right up there with "Hey, Zebra! Get off your knees, you're blowing the game!" This post is a bit deceptive. I was wondering why (or how) police would taser an entire team. I guess this incident is something of an embarrassment to FIFA, as the story suggests, but I bet Roger Goodell would trade for it. It feels like an awful lot of sports are taking a beating this week.

Then reversed to, "If you can't beat us on the ice, beat us off." Just remember to cuddle afterward. This seemed to have stemmed from what the Chileans thought was a screw job during the game from refs. Debris was thrown at officials as they left the field. Given the incident involving the Chileans last week, perhaps FIFA needs to sit the Chilean team out for a bit to teach them some manners. That or line them up and Taser them.

German referee Wolfgang Stark called 53 fouls - 30 against Chile. Did they manage to play any football, or was the match just a series of free kicks? I think the artificial turf played a big role in this tourney whether FIFA want to admit it or not. In most matches players just didn't tackle at all, and when they did it was certainly whistled. A combination of players being unsure of the surface and overprotective refs produced matches that seemed more like indoor soccer than international football. I watched five matches in the tourney, the only one with any tackles was USA v Austria, and pretty much everyone on the pitch had a yellow card after 90 minutes.

Conn Smythe. Thanks for the correction, Tommy. I knew it had to be one of the 'Leafs greats.

I'm probably not the only one who finds it ironic that Chile is complaining about "unjustified aggression" from a police force, right?
