Gordon Takes Phoenix for the First Time, Ties "The Intimidator" for Career Victories.: Tough racing down the stretch against Tony Stewart, then a victory lap with the #3 flag. The Rainbow Warrior takes Phoenix for the first time in 16 races, and notches career victory number 76, tying him with the late Dale Earnhardt, Sr.

Well, I disagree. I think Jeff Gordon is right up there with Earnhardt and all the rest. It's just a matter of time (more than likely , this year) that he'll pass Dale Sr. Like him or hate him, He's one of the top 5 drivers in Nascar.imho

Gordon will have more wins, period. I haven't checked the stats, but I'll wager that Gordon has won a higher % of races than Earnhardt.

I am not a Gordon fan, I am a Dale JR. fan, but Gordon is the real deal in any generation. He races against the likes of Tony Stewart, Mark Martin, Jimmy Johnson, and yes Dale Jr. oh he even raced against Dale SR.. Any of them from Tony to Dale Jr. would have held there own in the NASCAR of the past. I have seen them all take someone out to gain position just like the old days. So yes Gordon is the real deal.

Jeff didn't race against people like Yorborough(please correct my spelling) and whenever NASCAR didn't have this new point system. Anybody who thinks that Dale Jr. is one of the greatest has problems. I like Jr. but he isn't Hall-of-Fame quality. And yes Gordan is the real deal just not at Dale's level. It's much easier to win now a days because of rule changes and not as many great drivers to compete against.

You seem to be missing the point. Gordon has won races in which he's raced against Dale Sr., which deflates your point that he couldn't compete against the Intimidator. Also, Jeff Gordon does predate the current points system, by nearly a full decade. If you don't have your facts straight, it's difficult at best to make blanket statements like the ones you keep making. Look stuff up before you slop all over the thread.

Go to racing-reference.info and there should be a search box that says " Drivers search" on the homepage.

Racing is tougher today than in the past. Everyone saying there were more great racers in the past has it backward. There were some really fantastic racers, but the fields weren't nearly as deep as they are today. As for the new point system helping Gordon, it cost him a title in its first season. Under the old format, he'd have won the year Kurt Busch beat Johnson and Gordon by less than 10 points. The new system wiped out Gordon's sizable lead going into the chase. There are an awful lot of sour grapes Gordon haters out there. Case in point: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070424/ap_on_sp_au_ra_ne/car_nascar_earnhardt_flag_flap_1 Glad to see Dale Jr. isn't one of them. (Sorry, I can't figure out how to post a link in the middle of the comment.)

I am not a Jeff Gordan hater and i wish there was a way to delete and edit comments that i have posted.(note to SpoFi). And it's up to people to decide who is better these days. I just wish Dale's career could have ended with retirement, not death. I'm sure he would have given Jeff a pat on the back.

TB, there is a way to edit and/or delete your comment for a short time after you make it. At the bottom of your post, you'll see two commands; one says "Edit this Comment." The other says "Delete this Comment."

In my opinion Jeff Gordan will never be as great as Dale Earnhardt Sr. There's just not as competative drivers as there used to be around when Dale started so in a way its easier for an experiaced driver like Jeff to take the checkard flag. Not a dis to Gordan, i know he's a great driver and obviously one of the best, but i dont think he should be put at the same level of greatness as Dale just because of numerical statistics.
