The Official Irish Road Bowling Association Website.: Was I raised in a cave or am I living under a rock to not have ever heard of this fun looking sport! What a great game! Can some European Spofi'ers enlighten me more about this? Or perhaps some wiser North American ones? This looks like a real blast!

"Was I raised in a cave or am I living under a rock to not have ever heard of this fun looking sport!" Why yes, yes you were ;) I've never seen a game played, but once a year or so there'll be coverage on the telly. It isn't a common sport where I'm from (Sligo), but down the south of the country, around Cork I think it is more popular. We also have the Poc fada, or long puc where two contestants hit a sliother (ball) with a hurl (a bat of sorts) over up and down a mountain.

Not that we get bored and make up our own sports when we're drunk or anything *cough*

I had never heard of this until I saw the fantastic music video of "Northern Lites" by the Super Furry Animals. Typically, YouTube has every single SFA video in existence - including the obscure early Welsh language ones - except "Northern Lites".

Road bowling looks like a slightly more sophisticated jackass stunt. In other words it looks uber fun. I have no idea what long puc is all about but I have been dying to see a hurling match since that Guiness commercial a few years back. That game looks wicked dangerous or fun, depending on your point of view. How many hurling related deaths are there every year?

I see that there is a course in my native city of Boston. How can this be? Are there any statistics kept on the number of road bowlers killed by speeding automobiles in Boston? Is Road Bowling the real reason for the tunnel collapse in the 'Big Dig'? Where are the investigative reporters? In all seriousness, I'm glad to see posts about the more arcane sports in this world. Not all are for the typical American palate, but most sure can be fun. Thanks, Commander.

There is no way you could play that game here in Pittsburgh. The roads are way too curvy and even if you could find a flat stretch of road, the ball would get swallowed up by a pothole. The game does look like fun though.

I could just see myself trying to explain this one to the cops here in L.A. "Honest officer! I'm not a vandal! It's a game! A real game! It really is! I didn't mean to put your headlights out!" LOL! It does look like the kind of thing we'd do out in the sticks when bored.
