Champ Car Driver Hits Deer on the Track: Now here's something you don't see everyday! I've damn near hit deer several times during my wilder (drunken) days running the back country roads of Michigan. But ON a track? Hope he comes out of the coma OK.

According to the Response Insurance group, car-deer crashes nationwide kill 150 people and a half-million deer each year, and cause an average of $2,000 in vehicle damage per crash. In Wisconsin, 11 people were killed in car-deer crashes in 2004. Seems like maybe this was just waiting to happen. Remember, guns don't kill people, venison does.

Oh Deer! I recall seeing a cow wondering onto a British Rally a few ago - perhaps where the phrase "mad cows" derived

I am honetly surprised that more open wheel drivers don't get hurt from having their heads exposed. I hope Cristiano has a speedy recovery. It isn't the first time I remember someone hitting a deer on the track. Neil Bonnett hit one at Pocono in a stock car. Even with the cars being more solid back then, it wiped the front of the car out.

*tongue firmly implanted in cheek* I use this opportunity to call for the complete cessation of ALL motorsports activity, of ANY kind. This useless waste of life, cutting down one so full of promise at such a tender age, MUST come to a stop. What will be next, hunters using chainsaws to drop trees onto deer? Signed, A PETA friend

Yep, dviking, that is a true statistic you quoted (150 deer related fatalities per annum), and, on average, bears kill only 1.5 people per year. So, you know some people out there are thinking about this and scatchin their heads. Who would I rather run into in a dark alley,er, part of the forest? Bambi, or Gentle Ben?

Even with the cars being more solid back then, it wiped the front of the car out. Years ago I used to work at a truck wash. At least once every other week we power washed the remnants of a deer off a truck. They can do some serious damage even to a Peterbuilt.

I live in Wi and have spent alot of time at RA. It is not uncommon for wildlife to wander out onto the track. The track is in a very rural area. The year Al Unser won his forth Indy 500 he hit a rabbit during the race. The rabbit liquefied on contact and sprayed onto his teammates (Rick Mears) car behind him. Dviking, does your source say how many people are killed by pigs each year? I hope Cristiano has a full and speedy recovery.

Pigs are evil.

Pigs are evil. posted by commander cody You know that I care what happens to you And I know that you care for me So I don't feel alone Of the weight of the stone Now that I've found some where safe To bury my bone And any fool knows a dog needs a home a shelter from the pigs on the wing.
