Boxer Michael Quarry dies at 55 : Mike Quarry, the younger brother of hard-punching heavyweight Jerry Quarry who lost to Bob Foster in his own bid for the light heavyweight title, has died. He was 55. Quarry died Sunday night at The Seasons in La Habra, an assisted living community. He started not being able to talk or walk three months ago. The cause of death was pugilistic dementia, the same disease that had turned Jerry Quarry into a confused, childlike man before he died at 53 in 1999.

Wow 55 years old and living in a assisted community. If that don't give up and coming want to be boxers something to think about then nothing will. Maybe Michael should have been steered away from boxing when not one but two of his brothers died from being bashed in the head continuesly. this will give anti-violent and anti-boxing people some more ammo. as to why boxing should be banned as a sport.

Without ambition one starts nothing. Without work one finishes nothing. The prize will not be sent to in the mail, we have to win it. The man who knows HOW to win it will always have a job, like the Quarry brothers. They got their collective blocks knocked off for years and made a few bucks. The man who also knows WHY to win it will always be his boss. Like the promotors who profit so greatly from these zealots who are willing to get their blocks knocked off. Another in a long line of boxing misfortunes.

my prayers are with the Quarry family. I grew up watching these brothers earning a living in a brutal sport... they were exciting boxers to watch and worthy to be part of the history of the sport....

As much as I have enjoyed boxing over the years, these kind of stories are always a reminder that it is brutal and unforgiving trade. The type and amount of punishment that men put themselves through for this sport is unbelievable sometimes. If helmets are mandatory in hockey, perhaps we should consider that headgear is necessary for boxing, in much the same manner as the HANS device is required in NASCAR, and in the same line of thinking that many PRCA members have as more and more of them don protective gear as well. Damn, that Foster fight was a good one. RIP.
