MetroStars no longer.: Major League Soccer has announced a 50% buyout of the MetroStars by sugar peddlers energy-drink monstrosity Red Bull. Effective immediately, there will be a new logo, team kit, and colors. Oh, they'll also now be called Red Bull New York. Here's an interview with RBNY (rolls off the tongue, doesn't it?) GM Alexi Lalas. Sports Network Soccer Editor Josh Simeone has some interesting thoughts on the transaction.

this is terrible for sports. Business's shouldn't be buying sports teams and naming them after their products. What's next? The Trojan Condoms?

What's next? The Trojan Condoms? Hmmmm. Do you want a sports team name that gives you wings or a chance of protection against disease, unwanted pregnancy and decreased sensitivity? That's a tough one.

Me thinks Alexi has been drinking the Red Bull Kool Aid.

By the way how much money does this Deiter Mateschitz have? He owns two Formula 1 teams, sponsors a whole bunch of other motorsport teams. Plus all of the other things they sponsor or run. How much Red Bull can they sell?

I was pretty PO'd about it at first. Then, I found out they were going to be referred to as the New York Red Bulls when playing instead of "Red Bull New York." (This is just the club name). I don't love the fact about companies naming teams after the company name, but as long as this doesn't become common place in the MLS, I don't have problem with it.

It's better than Nippon Ham Fighters.

I haven't been an MLS fan, so I'm not attached to the MetroStars name. I like Red Bull New York as long as the financing is there to keep the name for decades, and the company doesn't change it every few years as it rebrands the company and its products.

Someone's hijacked Ufez's computer, user name and password! I know he didn't just create a duplicate FPP. Fuck a duck. This is what I get for not scrolling down far enough (and working an 80 hour week). Massive apologies. What's next? The Trojan Condoms? For what it's worth, my high school mascot was the Trojans. Rival teams tried to taunt us by throwing condoms our way. We thanked them.

We thanked them. If, by "thanking them," you mean that you informed them you were going to use the condoms on their cheerleaders, then bully for you. If not, well, that's a damn shame, 'cause that would've put those bastards in their place, but good.

As the make of the previous FPP, I forgive Ufez since my college nickname is also Trojans and, well, he does live in Texas.
