Ronny Turiaf set to join Lakers: "Ronny Turiaf is set to join the Los Angeles Lakers less than six months after undergoing open-heart surgery."

This story doesn't seem to have gotten much press, but I think it's a great one. Not only do I hope he can help the Lakers from the get-go (they really need something), but, from a medical perspective, this seems to me to be a better comeback than Alonzo Mourning. The guy had open-heart surgery in July, and he's already ready to play. Of their three draft picks, Ronny was the only one who looked like he could be a significant contributor right away. I was pretty disappointed when they said he had to have surgery that could keep him out the entire year. Also, I hope Kupchak takes the opportunity to waive Slava, the Amazing 7-Foot Doorstop.

Why the hell are we talking about this and not either, the NFL playoffs or how good the Detroit Pistons are the best team in the NBA?

Why the hell are we talking about this and not either, the NFL playoffs or how good the Detroit Pistons are the best team in the NBA? Because this is SportsFilter, not NFLPlayoffsFilter or DetroitPistonsFilter. Last I checked, basketball is widely regarded as a sport, and the Lakers are generally accepted to be a basketball team (most years). If you'd like to discuss either of those things, go make your own post, or join one of the existing threads, and stop hijacking others'. Also remember the intent of this site: to discuss interesting sports-related news, and not just a forum for pissing contests about who's team is better.

No story greater than someone coming back from injury/tragedy. Just hope that everything goes well for that young man and that ALL precautions and examinations have been made. The lakers need some help Kobe can't be dumping in 40+ points per game he's gonna get worn down eventually.

This is probably one of the largest health miracles in sports history.

Why the hell are we talking about this and not either, the NFL playoffs or how good the Detroit Pistons are the best team in the NBA? Because it fucking pleases us. You don't like the thread, feel free to let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya. Otherwise, try to add something besides idiocy. Oh, and Steve Francis sucks.

This my friend is great news. I thought the worst when we got the news of his heart problem. I was shocked to find out that he was playing ball somewhere recently and now he's ready to rejoin the team? Welcome back.

Open heart surgery in July? Amazing. Hope it works out for him. And I agree with jcab.

amazing. i think i read somewhere that his condition was likened Hank Gathers' that lead to his cardiac arrest on the court at my alma mater. less than a year later, he's going to play professional basketball! modern medical miracle. i saw ronny play a lot in the wcc and he's exactly the kind of hustle guy the lakers need. i don't expect phil will give him more than 4 to 6 MPG, but i hope even that much will put some fire under some of the other so-called big men.

Hopefully he'll come out for his few minutes and leave a good impression - try to gradually earn some more minutes. Also, I like the comparisons to Mark Madsen. I liked his energy and was sorry to see him go. Like you said, ninjavshippo, the Lakers need some hustle, someone who can fight for loose balls and harass an opponent in the waning minutes.
