Heidi Klum to grab balls this Friday.: OK, I don't think she's actually going to be picking the balls, but Mrs. Seal will be hosting the Final Draw for the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany. Read this puff piece interview for her answers to tough questions like "What will you be wearing?" and "Who do you think is the best-looking footballer?" (nice dig on Beckham there, Heidi.)

Is this actually a sports thread? It sounds more like something from Us Weekly...

I really don't follow much soccer. What is the significance of the US not drawing in the top 8?

posted by willthrill72 at 04:25 PM on December 06, 2005

top 8 refer to the top seeds. Those guys get to avoid each other in the first-round group tournament; they'll all be the first to be placed into eight separate groups of four teams each.

Mexico in the top 8? Are they better than the Czechs of the Dutch? The criteria allegedly used is performance in the last 2 WCs, which puts these two at a disadvantage since they didn't qualify on at least one occasion. I know the world rankings/seedings are crap, but the Mexico thing is is just a sop to ensure the seeds are not just fromEuro-Sth America. And what's with Serbia Montenegro and the special group - are they trying to make sure they don't get drawn with Croatia or Iran?

S&M got put off to the side to make sure there aren't three European sides in any one group, so they must be drawn into a group headed by either Brazil, Mexico or Argentina. USA missed taking Italy's seed by one point though I agree Netherlands were the biggest loser.

Thanks bill. That makes sense with the other geographic groupings. The good thing about geography is that Australia won't meet one of the African teams, who can pull off a surprise even against the big teams. I think we have a better chance playing the lower ranked Europeans and over hyped teams like the US (see new FPP on Arena's latest comments - erk). Only one underdog per group please!
