Rockies rookie shortstop clarifies how he was injured: Clint Barnes, at first, said he tripped with a bag of groceries while going up a flight of stairs. Now he says that he was carrying a gift package of deer meat he recieved after an afternoon of riding 4-wheelers.
I don't understand what the big deal is. So it was dear meat, rather than groceries. It is not if he tripped while being drunk or high.

Just how close was he to this meat, anyway?

It's a little suspicious given that (1) he lied about it, (2) he engaged in risky activity that same day, (3) an ATV injury would have a more negative effect on his career, and (4) other athletes, e.g., Jeff Kent, have lied about injuries for contract, etc. reasons.

is 4-wheeling considered a dangerous activity that would negate a contract, a la jay williams and his leg and pelvis-busting crotch rocket?

4-wheelers can be very, very dangerous. Mostly if you going way too fast, but yeah, they can fuck your shit up. A friend of mine was going around a curve too fast on a dirt road and he ended up in a coma for a month.

Now that we know Barmes was lying, I have trouble buying his story about injuring himself on stairs. There's no logical reason to hide the fact he was handling Todd Helton's meat when he fell down. Clearly, the guy took a header off an ATV and concocted the staircase injury to avoid looking like a dork for derailing a dream rookie season on a 4-wheeler.

Luckily he didn't choke on Todd's meat. Then he would really get a ribbing.

Who cares what he was carrying? If he fell because of what he was carrying, big deal. His injury won't miraculously be fixed just because he was carrying something different from what he said the first time. But if he was really injured playing with his friend's ATV, the team should either bounce him or cut off his money until he gets back in the game.

There is a huge difference between groceries and a package of Meat. Maybe the rookie will think twice next time before taking a package of dear meat home with him, especially from an old veteren. Todd the veteren needs to be more carefull in how he gives his meat to rookies. Maybe make them eat it at his home only.

I hope the press leaves the kid alone on this. Its bad enough to get seriously injured while you are having a wonderful rookie season...
