NFL to Coach: "Look Like Belichick, Not Landry": The NFL has told Mike Nolan they want him pimping licensed gear on the field, not wearing suits.
Hank Stram had a team blazer. His tie was just red though.

I'm surprised that NFL and Nascar brand suits don't exist already...

Frankly, I'm surprised the NBA and NCAA basketball haven't gone this way yet.

imo, you let the man honor his father.

I guess I never paid much attention, but I never thought of Belichick's attire as "league-sanctioned team garb". Does it even have a Patriots logo on it? It looks like a plain old dark gray sweatshirt.

The NFL is way out of touch here. There is more to life than Marketting Rights and Money....

This is a jump-the-shark moment for the NFL. The guy they named the trophy after wouldn't put up with being used as a dress-up doll. If coaches continue to sell some of the ugliest bodies in sports to merchandise companies after this, how can they expect to get any respect?

Nice comment and link Rcade. Boy that is sure a boat-load of Tuna! In my opinion, Belichick looks like a wayward rock star trying to hide his Identity......

Hee hee. I just hopped back to SpoFi and saw the FPP again, and read it as "Look like Belichick, not Laundry". "But Belichick does look like laundry!" I thought. I guess you hadda be there, or maybe be one of those people who dresses out of the laundry basket most mornings.

Tagliabue sucks. The NFL doesn't prosper by forcing every single person into one mold. But the PR backlash in this instance will surely see Nolan wearing a suit and tie on the sidelines come September.

The NFL succeeded in getting Plummer to take Pat Tillman's number off his helmet without much of a PR backlash.

If I were Nolan, I would agree to this, so long as Tagliabue agreed to show up wearing an NFL thong at the 50-yard line in Candlestick. Until then, Pete, STFU, I'll wear what I feel comfortable in and you go back to helping bone players with non-guaranteed contracts. This last comment is an indication that garfield has won out over me from a previous discussion about Terrell Owens holding out this season. I submit.

I don't know which to be more flabbergasted at: That Nolan got turned down, or that he had to ask permission to dress neatly in a suit and tie in the first place. One of the things that I used to like about the Cowboys of old was that Landry always looked like a class act out there.

I hope part of his sideline attire is a Tagliabue headband.

The league could use a bit of class, that's for sure. It's just a shame that class might come from something as superficial as the clothes a coach wears, although they do look a little silly being human billboards to market the "brand" the teams have become. Give me the Man In The Hat any day....

Next step: market team-licensed blazers and ties.
