Haslett admits steroid use: It looks like it might be time to recall some Super Bowl rings as the Saints coach admits to using steroids as a player and calls the Steelers steroid pioneers in the NFL.

I'm shocked. Steriods in football? Wake the President...

It wasn't really against the rules until '90, so... hard to blame Haslett or the Steelers. You wouldn't penalize someone for working out...

Nice try, but if no one is allowed to use that excuse in baseball, they shouldn't be allowed to use it in football either. I agree with what you say, but I'm just warning you in advance that some "integrity of the sport" and "asterix-lovers" are going to go all "coo-coo for cocoa-puffs" on you for saying that.

In the big steroid debate, it is often mentioned that "it wasn't against the rules." If the steroids aren't perscribed by a doctor, their use is illegal. Why should the game have to have rules against illegal behavior?

How hard is it now to get a doctor's scrip? In the '70s, faggedabudit!

FWIW, Wikipedia indicates that anabolic steroids were not banned under the Controlled Substances Act until 1991. I'm trying to find other references, but it's quite possible they weren't illegal when the Steelers were taking them.

They were apparently banned by the IOC in 1975, but the earliest date I can find that references them being actually illegal in the US is 1988.

How about we send some late 1960''s, early 70's players before congress to see what they know? Oh I forgot congress is on spring break.............

What billsaysthis said. "...but it's quite possible they weren't illegal when the Steelers were taking them." I'll assume you mean when they were ALLEGEDLY taking them because as near as I can tell there is ONE (Haslett) person saying it happened and at least one (Rooney) saying it didn't. Put the pitchfork down.

How hard is it now to get a doctor's scrip? In the '70s, faggedabudit! True...and the sad fact is that it isn't that hard to get an illegal perscription (for many drugs) today. I'll assume you mean when they were ALLEGEDLY taking them because as near as I can tell there is ONE (Haslett) person saying it happened and at least one (Rooney) saying it didn't. Haslett's comments are hardly the first to indite Steelers players of the period of steroid use. You are right to use the word ALLEGEDLY but you can't possibly believe that steroid use in the 70's and 80's wasn't prevelant in the NFL (see: Alzado, Lyle)
