Thanks for this post, lbb. I thought that Athens was going to be their grand finale, but I'll definitely tune into whichever Spanish language stations is broadcasting them on my antenna. These women had one hell of an impact on US Women's Soccer. I hope those that carry on can continue the legacy. I'll miss them all. Okay, Foudy a bit more than the others...but still.

Ufez, it's going to be on espn classic. they're doing a 10-hour tribute to hamm on wednesday. ESPN Classics Tribute To Mia Hamm Wed., 12/8 7:30 p.m. ET - SportsCentury: Mia Hamm 8:30 p.m. ET - Classic Big Ticket: 1999 Women's World Cup - U.S. Women vs. China 11:00 p.m. ET - U.S. Women vs. Mexico, LIVE (Mia Hamm, Julie Foudy and Joy Fawcett's Last Game) 1:05 a.m. ET - SportsCentury: Mia Hamm 2:00 a.m. ET - Classic Big Ticket: 1999 Women's World Cup - U.S. Women vs. China i went to their game at giants stadium last month. had a decent crowd of close to 19,000, which is pretty good considering it was a wednesday night. everytime mia would take a corner, that entire section of the stadium would stand and cheer. all you saw were flash bulbs. the only other time i saw them was in 1994 at the chiquita cup (i believe it's now known at the u.s. cup) at rutgers. it's amazing to see how far they've come since then.

I posted on this today, so check out my blog for what I had to say on this in detail. In a nutshell, these women had a tremendous influence on the world of sport and on young girls' self-esteem, and they should be thanked very much for that.

SportsProf: while self-linking to your blog is OK when it is done in-thread, it is hardly an auspicious debut for your first ever post. When you forget to include a link to your blog either in the post or on your user page.......well, I guess that isn't a self-link then, is it? Forget I said anything....

Thanks 86. (How did you find it?). Welcome SportsProf. Sorry, that sounded a little bitchy this morning, but you know........

so who do they pass the torch too? I think it depends on which torch you mean. If you mean the the national team torch, it would be the remainder of the USA soccer roster. If you mean the torch of furthering the cause of sports opportunities for women and girls...I guess it's up to all of us, including the three "retirees", because this is something I don't think they'll be retiring from.

also, as of now there are still a good amount of veterens left to lead the way...lilly, chastain, scurry, rampone and a few others. and if they get rid of their coach you might see milbrett back too. beyond that it seems like wambach and o'reilly can pick up any goal-scoring slack left by hamm's departure. for their sake though i hope they get rid of heinrichs because the rest of the world is catching/or has already caught up to them. i think if they don't shake things up in the next couple years it could get ugly.

I like the fact that she used Garciaparra on her jersey. Plus the two assists in a 5-0 win, going out on top like that is great.
