The columnist Russ Smith wants to prevent the "terrifying prospect" of George Will becoming commissioner of baseball, citing as evidence Will's April 4 column calling Bud Selig the sport's "greatest commissioner."

Interesting read. I whole-heartedly agree that Selig has been an awful commissioner and Will is way off base in saying Selig is the greatest. I think a lot of the accomplishments Will attributes to Selig probably would have come about anyway and are more likely the result of intelligent people surrounding Selig than the man's own visionary nature. I moreso think, however, that George Will would be bad for the game because he is a partisan hack and would be a polarizing figure, even in the relatively unpoliticized world of baseball.

George Will has a passion for baseball that I don't believe Selig has. Will would be an upgrade from Bud, but surely there are better choices out there. Hmmm...maybe a good choice would be a former owner who will soon be looking for work?

Very funny, Vito. Don't give him any ideas. I don't really see a problem with George Will becoming commissioner. He's extremely passionate and knowledgeable abot the game and its place in society, he knows what to do in front of a camera, despite his conservatism in other arenas he's not completely against progress in the game, he's not Bud Selig... why the hell not?
