Doesn't baseball ever have an offseason?

In other news, this Inanimate Carbon Rod is being traded to the Orlando Magic.

In other news, this Inanimate Carbon Rod is being traded to the Orlando Magic. Huh? Am I missing something?

Simpsons reference. The Rod, and not Homer, gets a ticker-tape parade upon their return from space. [1F13]

No offense meant, but I found the re-emergence of this story completely farcical. 'It could still happen, despite the mutual denials. No further talks have occurred, but beat writers have imagined a scenario in a parallel universe that has a 0.000420% chance of bringing The Inanimate Carbon Rod (fct, awesome) to the Nuke Plant for processing.'

one of the problems with the initial go around with this trade was too many people were talking. Boras was talking, Moorad was talking, leaks were coming from all sides, Nomar was talking. Too much talking. however, it can be noted that the espn article states " a high-ranking baseball official indicated to ESPN's Dan Patrick on Tuesday that the Red Sox and Rangers are resuming talks." if this is indeed going on, i'd presume there's some sort of mutual gag order in place. the whole thing can only benefit from the silence. i don't buy too much into the JFK/XFiles conspiracy aspects of it. Some of the happenings are odd and maybe they'll eventually make sense and maybe it's just coincidental.

Am I the only person in Boston who thinks Nomar is (1) apparently the last guy in professional sports who feels (felt?) that staying with one team for an entire career was valuable and (2) is getting completely shat on by the Sox organization? I mean, I'm a big Neyer fan, and I love ARod's stats as much as anyone, and no one will really miss Manny, but somehow the Sox will seem slightly less loveable (even if measurably better) if this trade goes through.

good catch, yerfat.

I thought that 100% tieguy, and it was cemented after Nomar called into WEEI... "How dare they do this to Nomar? How dare they just go try to get another shortstop? He has no idea why they are doing this!" ...and then I kind of had a slight change of heart when I started hearing about the failed renegotiating attempts. "Nearing the end of this past spring training, Sox owner John Henry engaged Garciaparra informally about the various grievances Garciaparra held and what it might take for his star shortstop to commit to a long-term contract. Henry found himself dismayed by the inflexible tenor of the conversation; the issues were intractable, if not impossible to repair. Garciaparra hated the lack of space in the Sox clubhouse. He was frustrated with the lack of privacy in the city, and he couldn't deal with an unreasonable media. He even disliked the fact that the weather was different from what he grew up with. Henry came away with the belief that he simply could not reach Garciaparra; as long as he played in Boston, Garciaparra's complaints could not be mollified. After all, he may have been able to pay $700 million for a baseball team, but even Henry couldn't change the weather." -- Bryant, Boston Herald I kind of realized Nomar may have been a little bit disingenuous in his 'EEI interview. This whole thing shouldn't have been a shock to him, certainly not as much as he made it seem like in that interview. Maybe he was relying too much on the idea that the team totally had no other SS alternative or perhaps he was holding out for the almighty buck. Who knows. I still like him. He's a great ballplayer and more than that, a great caring guy. He does a ton for the community and he's amazingly dedicated to the kids. As a business, if the team has to make this move, for whatever reasons they have (and we may never really know them all), then they have to do it. You just can't change the weather, even for Nomar.

Yeah, I have heard some stuff to that effect, and it doesn't really speak well of him. But to his credit, none of that came out until now- lots of other primadonnas in the sport (including ARod) have complained about such things loudly and publicly. Sadly, it's the right business move- even if I'm put off by a team and a Good Guy(tm) disagreeing, I know I'm in a small minority who'll be more than happy to see the Good Guy (tm) leave if it means more wins. I'd really rather cheer for the lovable loser (or in this case lovable 90+ win team) than a bought winner. :/
