While speaking to a California high school's journalism students in 2002, Pete Rose admitted to betting on baseball, but they chose not to report it in the school paper.
Posing a question to a student, he said, "If you're going to become an alcoholic or drug addict or spousal beater or a gambler, which do you hope to do?" What a fucked up question to ask a high school kid. Rose's plan (confession, book release, lots of press) is seeming to backfire. The more I hear out of him and about him, the worse he looks for it. Vaguely related, but one Rose thread a day is certainly enough: Hank Aaron had some unkind words for Rose citing an "insincere apology".

You don't see O.J. answering peoples questions with "Well, ever since I killed Nicole ..." "Let's say I committed this crime ... Even if I did do this, it would have been because I loved her very much, right?" Cover of Equire Magazine

.... the editors chose not to write about Rose's confession because of the discrepancy between the two statements and also "out of respect to him because he came in and did a favor for us." Wow, these kids are going to make great journalists. Way to be fair and balanced kids!

This will be one of those moments that the kids look back on with supreme regret, I think. They could have had the scoop of the decade, and chose not to -- out of respect for a guy who would make a buck off of his admission a year-and-a-half later.
On another note, how dumb does this story make Rose look? You don't see O.J. answering peoples questions with "Well, ever since I killed Nicole ..."
