Hoosier hoax hooks Rome?: The friendly folks at the Hoosier Gazette published a satircal article about Purdue signing the wrong Jason P. Smith to a basketball scholarship. After FARK.COM ran the link, apparently Jim Rome bit and reported the "story" as fact. Of course, there's no mention of it on his web site, although he does find the space to bill himself as perhaps "the most respected voice in the world of sports broadcasting." He says he was just kidding ... your thoughts, and does it affect your view of Rome?

I don't view him. Period.

Apparently at least one news source had this up and ripped it down. I think it's pretty damned funny, but then /full disclosure I am not a huge Rome fan.

Rome is an ass.

Did Rome, at the beginning of his television career have a set with two chairs and life size baseball cards scattered in the background? I do not have a take on Rome seeing as I am unable to listen to him during the day. From what others say about him, I am glad I do not have access to his show.

Aren't you a Dodgers fan, jasonspaceman? Are you in LA? Because that's where he's based. Maybe you just don't have a chance to listen during the day is all. I sometimes catch him over my lunch on the radio, and he's just trying to be the shock jock of sports radio. He tries to be controversial, but one of his stances - his perplexing grudge against women's sports - comes off as misogynistic and boneheaded. The basic gist of his show is that he states a piece of news, then states it again. Slowly. Then he says it again, with some words thrown in for emphasis. Then he'll say something like "I just can't understand that" and repeat the news item again. Over and over. So irritating.

yes *sob* I am a Dodger fan but I am based out of western NY. He's on a local station here but they do not have an internet broadcast so I could listen.

Another of Rome's perplexing stances is his antipathy to soccer, but in bashing it he sure betrays a lot of knowledge of it. My biggest quibble with him is that everytime he interviews someone, he states "really great interview", "it doesn't get any better," etc. But I guess blowing his own horn got him where he is today.

I sometimes catch about 5 minutes of Rome on my drive home from work (I live in London ON). I have to say that he's the most boring speaker I've ever heard on the radio. His shtick is the same... say something, pause, repeat but reword, pause, rhetorical quesiton, pause, nonsensical point, pause...I usually don't listen after the first commercial break. If I wasn't so busy concentrating on the drive, I'd take the time to switch stations the moment I hear his voice.

But I guess blowing his own horn got him where he is today. For a guy who spends as much time fellating himself as Rome does, it couldn't have been worded any better. When I lived in San Antonio, I listened to Rome on a semi-regular basis. I can't argue with the fact that the man is intelligent, funny and articulate. I just couldn't stand: 1) his need to base his humor on trashing other people, which is the same reason I hate Tom Green. If you can't be funny without ripping someone else, you just aren't that funny. 2) his annoying habit of repeating the same information over and over again. The first time, most of the time, I found the stuff humorous and somewhat enlightening. By the fifth time, though ... please, just shut it.

I hate Rome, so I'm happy to hear that he got spun. I don't get him on local radio anymore, and I'm not sure if it's a blessing or a curse, seeing as how Seattle sports radio blows ass. Rome would probably fit right in on the lineup.

I think the thing that galls me the most about Rome, from the 2-3 times I've listened to him, is the insistence on not just repeatedly stating things, but repeatedly stating 'I don't want to talk about controversial topic X' over and over again until not only has he beaten controversial topic X into the ground, he's had several callers talk about the thing he supposedly doesn't want to talk about. Oh, and he's made a complete ass of himself.

I'll go down as Rome's only fan here at sportsfilter. Granted, I think he's annoying, self centered, and not all that talented. Still I find him entertaining. Rome being fooled is entertainment plus.

I'm also a Rome fan. He's inventive, strange, and occasionally has a pretty insightful take on current events in sports. He also has a strong rapport with a lot of high-profile sports figures that makes his interviews worth checking out. I can't stand most of his listeners, though. I can only hear a few of their bad Rome impressions before changing the dial.
