Just got my haircut by the mother in law of Rasheed Wallace. No one's day can top that

That is awesome. I know a few tattoo artists and I'm waiting for one of them to let us know that someone as well known as Rasheed has booked an appointment. I don't say anything about it; the talent level being what it is, I just figure it's a matter of time.

My own approach to tattoos is simple: I'll get one after Howard gets one.

(Yikes, just remembering that Howard is a Navy man and may already be inked.)

Back in 1988 I spent three days in Washington DC working with a man that turned out to be the grandfather of Len Bias. I didn't find out until day 3.

We began talking about it, then sat down and he started pulling out photographs. Luckily it was a quiet moment of a Friday afternoon and we could take a few minutes to reflect and reminisce. Len had only died 2 years before, so his grandfather's memories were still fresh and the pain was still raw.

I got my first about 10 years back, and now I'm just trying to figure out how to get the rest of 'em. "We've only got so many years on this earth, I'm gonna get real weird with 'em."--Frank Reynolds, Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

"Tattoo, tattoo! Lights out in 5 minutes. Now tattoo." OK, that's from my sea duty time, every evening 5 minutes before 4 bells of the 1st watch (2155 if you don't understand the watch system aboard ship). Turns out my sea duty was as a civilian tech rep, but it was the most fun job I ever worked. Home ported in Yokosuka, Japan, and USS Midway was known as Hotel 41. Plenty of opportunity for tattoos in such places as Hong Kong; Subic Bay, PI; and Pattaya Beach, Thailand, but I always found other delights to occupy my time. Our son was conceived in Japan, and my wife and I seriously considered having him tattooed with "Made in Japan" somewhere around his butt. We never did, and now he says he wishes we had. Cool about Len Bias. There are Celtics fans who still grieve.

Don't hold your breath waiting for a tattoo. My fair body has remained unsullied for all of its 81 years, and shall remain so for whatever I have left.

I see that Yokosuka is just south of Tokyo. Neat. I hope you had chances to see the big city. My daughter is signed up to do a two week tour of Japan with some of her middle school schoolmates next March. Speaking of Tokyo, I highly suggest HBO's 'Tokyo Vice.' Excellent show.

My dear friend, a USAF Colonel (Ret.), was once stationed in or near Thailand. When someone was missing and unaccounted for at the base, his buddies would attempt to cover for him by telling the CO: "Sir, I believe that Maj. Smith is working on the railroad".

A week later, the colonel explained to me that the phrase was code for "laying Thai's".

Ouch. It's not my joke. It was a different time back then.
