In a baseball postseason that's already shaping up to be the most memorable in years, Sammy Sosa's ninth-inning homer Tuesday into the huge crowd on Chicago's Waveland Avenue is already taking on mythic proportions. "Nobody has ever hit a more dramatic home run," writes Randy Smith. "Tell the story of where you were the night Sosa stepped in against Urbina. Future generations will love to hear it."

ahhh, the good tidbits that I come to SpoFi to read. Reminds me of the beginning of Delillo's novel Underworld which is set around Bobby's Thompson's Shot Heard Round the World.

The Cubs better rap this one up on Tuesday or it might be 1984 all over again... [/knocks on wood]

Let's let the Cubs win the series before people start riding Sosa's jock again, ok? Besides, shouldn't the homer only be mythic if they won the game? I mean, it tied the game, and they wound up losing in extra innings...what's the big deal? (And, yes, I am a Marlins fan...so what?? ;->)

Amen, bcb... mythic, game-losing shots aren't terribly mythic in my mind. I don't think anyone else's either, except maybe this columnist. That said, it has been a great postseason so far- I'm a little bitter that I'm leaving for India in a few hours and will miss the rest of it... :/

Yes, having not won the game, and not even a series clinched at that, would pretty much elimate this from the mythic home run league. Dramatic yes, but try for a little perspective please.

those of us that didn't see the game and can't remember the details and didn't bother to review the recap and weren't there and aren't cubs fans can be a little susceptible to the myth-making. so, sheesh. you gotta win the game. the myth-making is like talking about Donnie Moore blowing the 1986 ALCS when sure, he gave up a home run that meant instead of the Angels winning Game 5 and clinching the series they went on to lose in extra innings... but can you blame him for the Angels not winning game 5 in extra innning and then dropping games 6 and 7 too? so i feel that yes, perspective is necessary. it isn't that interesting when the game didn't go the Cubs way.
