"... the Asians are killing our tour. Absolutely killing it. Their lack of emotion, their refusal to speak English when they can speak English. They rarely speak. We have two-day pro-ams where people are paying a lot of money to play with us, and they say hello and goodbye. Our tour is predominantly international and the majority of them are Asian. They've taken it over." -- former LPGA pro Jan Stephenson

People from a different culture don't behave exactly like Americans? What a surprise.

This Jan Stephenson, who the hell is he and where did he get those breasts?

Dusted, do you mean the Asian foreign cultural thing of stoicitiy and demureness? Or the Australian foreign cultural thing of saying any idiotic thing that comes into one's head?

The Australian things sounds funnier.

What a stupid and racist and look-at-me thing to say. In my mind, that's what Stephenson is best at: seeking attention. LPGA commish Votaw: "While I may not agree with some of the things in this interview, one magazine article is not going to change my opinion of Jan." Yeah, right. Political thing to say, but I bet he is silently fuming at her for this.

Wow. So that's why Skeletor spent all those lonely nights in Castle Greyskull. His wife was on the LPGA tour.

It's amazing how some observations seem so insightful after a few gin & tonics at the country club, but so hurtful when printed in a major magazine. Let's stay tuned to this one and clock the hang time. My guess is it dies down because she's a middle-aged woman. And in the words of Jimmy Fallon: "I think she's had some work done."

Has Jan met Rush Limbaugh? She looks and sounds like she would be perfect for him. At the very least, she can scare him sober (or better still, take more pain killers).

Hey, what the ...? Who got rid of the Rush post for today? Man, the Fooker and I had some brilliant comments in there.

The Rush post is here

what a dumbass

I posted the Rush column and was quickly excoriated by rcade. Never again will I blur the line between politics and sports. Although I would recommend that they do away with the "culture" choice from the drop down list.

Distasteful, racist remarks by this Jan Stephenson person.

This is just stupid. Even though she has the right to say whatever she pleases, she is just trying to round up publicity for a dying (?/dead?) sport -- Women's senior golf. Honestly I didn't even know it existed. There are stupid people born every second... and she is sure one of them.

No, the idiots are killing your tour.

"... the Asians are killing our tour." You sure it's not the part where the LPGA sucks a donkey's ballbag as far as entertainment value is concerned? Because that can't be helping.

posted by Samsonov14 at 02:11 PM on October 11, 2003

Maybe they get what they want here. No such thing as bad publicity and all that. People are now discussing women's golf. And we also now know there are a fair number of Asians on the women's tour. Learn something new every day. Have to agree with Samsonov though, his reasons would be the root of the problem (though the donkey's do seem to enjoy it). Does watching LPGA actually beat a stick in the eye? I have my doubts.

posted by pivo at 03:42 PM on October 11, 2003

Oh come now Jan, nobody watches women's golf anyway.

Especially not old women's golf.

First off, I didn't know Phyllis Diller could play. Now, the unpopular thing: She's absolutely right about pro-ams, and it's fair to pin it some of it on Asians if they choose not to speak English or just clam up. I highly doubt, however, that it's just Asians that are guilty. Does the PGA face the same thing? I don't know, and couldn't find anyone saying anything near what Stephenson said. As for where she got the breasts, I'm not sure ... but I plan to vacation there.

posted by wfrazerjr at 04:30 PM on October 11, 2003

And now, Stephenson issues a retraction. No word on whether she's also apologizing to everyone for forcing them to run a picture of her.

posted by wfrazerjr at 05:53 PM on October 11, 2003

Senior LPGA tour? They must be kidding. Where do they tee off from? The fringe of the green? And wfrazerjr stole my Phyllis Diller joke! Now I've got nothing!

"By no means did I intend to hurt anyone nor were the statements racially motivated. I clearly understand how these comments could be taken as racial comments, and for that I am truly sorry." What a Dumbass.

posted by garfield at 12:34 PM on October 13, 2003

nor were the statements racially motivated. No? Then how the fuck do you explain them, silly twit?

posted by billsaysthis at 12:58 PM on October 13, 2003

For the good of the tour, bill. That sounds plausible, don't it?

posted by garfield at 01:03 PM on October 13, 2003

Garfield, I don't quite get your meaning. Are you saying that Stephenson singled out a racial group for negative comments in order to bring a dastardly plot, one that's undermining her sport, to the public's attention. But race wasn't involved?

posted by billsaysthis at 03:51 PM on October 13, 2003

just ridiculing this ridiculous woman.

posted by garfield at 04:14 PM on October 13, 2003

Tiger Woods is, by all acounts, not very talkative either. In fact, a lot of people have called him arrogant and standoffish. Think he's killing the game? What we've got here is a healthy irritation at the demise of the ol' girls club. Nothing more.
