THE PATRIOTS, TOM BRADY AND THE GATHERING STORM: Today, on the three-year anniversary of the Patriots drafting Jimmy Garoppolo, the Jimmy over Tommy possibility remains real.

I don't see how Belichick trades Brady while he's playing like Brady. It'll take a sustained period of bad quarterbacking that leads to a benching first.

Three wild card factors in this: injury, Josh McDaniels, and Gisele.

If McDaniels takes a HC job somewhere, no guarantee that the new guy would be able to keep the Pats' offense at the same high level. Football might stop being fun for that unit.

Brady is superb at avoiding injury, but he also takes a fair amount of contact. Anything can happen at anytime. It could start with an injury on the OL, and a sub who missed an assignment in a protection scheme.

Gisele has probably already said "enough already" a bunch of times, but you never know when the message might finally sink home. I always remind myself that her armed security detail have fired their weapons at people in public before. I wouldn't want to send her into Xena mode. She's already laid down the law about Tom's presidential buddy connection.

If any drama begins to develop, when the games are on, I'll turn off the sound on the TV. No way I want to listen to all the foaming at the mouth that would go along with shots of Brady sitting on the bench in uniform and not playing, or standing on the sideline in crutches.

I don't want to see this end up like Marino's career did - he was reduced to hobbling around and screaming at his offense after every play in a deep state of frustration.

I saw Marino's last game as a pro -- the divisional round shellacking in Jacksonville. That season was pretty rough. It also sent Jimmy Johnson into coaching retirement.
