I don't understand the phrase "former first-round pick." How does a player stop being one?

I think you have to do something that would be seen as unbecoming for a first round pick to do.

Perhaps you decided to start the new year following the exploits of Mark Sanchez.

Who continued to cement his standing in that category this afternoon.

"First round pick" would suggest the current draft.
"Former first round pick" would suggest a previous draft. However, the better term would be "previous first round pick".

We didn't have an end-of-the-year discussion, but if we wanted to talk about plays of the year, my suggestion is "The Block".

- an amazing athletic play
- during a critical moment of a game
- in an important game
- by one of the best (players) in the game
- against one of the best (teams) in the game
- potentially changing the result of the game/championship
- helping produce an historic event

A 4-1 lead for the Leafs in the third period with 7 minutes to go?

I've seen this nightmare before...

Edit: And St. Auston saves the day!

I don't know if you can really call it a "play" but, "The Rain Delay" should probably be on a list of sports events somewhere because of its possible impact.

The Block wins for me too but I feel like I'm going to remember the Rajai Davis homer for just as long even if it doesn't check off as many boxes.

If the Indians win the World Series, then Davis' homer would be the winner for me.

It was a ridiculous year for impactful sport moments. The Ringer has a nice collection.

My favourites?

- Leicester City wins the EPL after being 5000-1 underdogs to start the season.
- Cleveland Cavaliers win the NBA championships after being down 3-1 in the finals against the team who set the regular season record for wins.
- Golden State wins SEVENTY-THREE GAMES!
- Chicago Cubs win the World Series after being down 3-1 in the series, ending the longest pro sports drought in North American history.
- The ending to the NCAA championship basketball game.
- Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps cement their legacy as the greatest of all time on land and in the water.
- Kobe Bryant's final game

And, on a personal note, three major league Toronto teams made it to at least the semi-finals for their sports, and the fourth one drafted The One Who Will Save Us All.

I'll go with Grum on Leicester City and sentimentally add Liverpool reaching two cup finals.
