Kobe Bryant announces retirement: Kobe Bryant -- 5-time NBA champion, 17-time All-Star, 3rd on the list of all-time scorers in the regular season and postseason, unconvicted but all-but-admitted rapist -- has announced his retirement via a poem on the Players' Tribune.

Not with a win but a clanger

Bryant is also the first NBA player ever to play more than half of his life for one team, a record that is unlikely to be broken.

I remember talking to a buddy of mine after his return from the Beach Ball Classic tournament in South Carolina my junior year of high school about how his team did. He said they did pretty well until they faced a team from Philly and that was the first time I heard the name "Kobe Bryant". I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that that was 20 years ago this December.

December 30 in Boston is now a "must see" game for me. I hope the real basketball fans in TD Garden will greatly outnumber the knee-jerk boo birds and give Kobe the ovation he deserves.
