Gotta give a shout out: to Mike Fiers for throwing a no hitter at the Dodgers on Friday. Walked 3, one in each of the first 3 innings, and retired the last 21 he faced. Nolan (7 no-nos) Ryan was there, and they met after the game. Seems like a good trading deadline pickup for the Astros.
grum, you frequently amaze me. Your contributions to SpoFi are consistently cogent, accurate, and entertaining. Thank you, sir.

Bad luck on the 134 pitch count there. Still since Ryan was at the game, and I'm not sure he ever had a no-hitter with so few pitches thrown, maybe that will help break the streak.

Only his last two no-hitters (in 1991, and 1990) were in the time period since they started recording the number of pitches thrown.
In both cases, he threw it in less than 134 pitches.
In 1990, it was 130 pitches.
In 1991, it was 122 pitches.
Only four 9-inning no-hitters (in the pitch-count era) have taken more than 134 pitches.

Could it be that Fiers had a little help?

Mike Fiers took 134 pitches to throw his no hitter.
The last pitcher to throw a no-hitter with exactly 134 pitches was...Johan Santana. His career went completely off the rails after that game.
The pitcher before that to throw a no-hitter with exactly 134 pitches was...Bud Smith. His career went completely off the rails after that game.
The pitcher before that to throw a no-hitter with exactly 134 pitches was...Doc Gooden. His career...well, it was pretty much off the rails the season before that, but it's not like it got much better...
