Mark Sanchez Hurt in Fourth Quarter of Preseason Game: Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News on what happened Saturday in the Jets/Giants preseason game: "Rex Ryan took ineptitude and incompetence to new heights with a boneheaded decision Saturday night that ultimately could seal his fate as the head coach of the Jets. Ryan, apparently consumed with winning a trophy of a Peanuts character, vaulted into the annals of dumb moves by putting Mark Sanchez into the fourth quarter of the Jets' meaningless preseason 24-21 overtime win over the Giants at MetLife Stadium. Sanchez promptly suffered a shoulder injury that clouds the Jets' quarterback situation."

Semi-serious question: has a head coach ever been fired in the preseason? Not counting like, getting a DUI or something non-coaching-related?

Coaching to win a preseason game ought to be a fire-able offense.

Bills and Dolphins fans don't want the man fired. Whatever happens to endear Ryan to Woody Johnson, those folks want it to continue in perpetuity.

If you're coaching to win the game I'd think you should probably send in your first string offensive line along with your first string Quarterback.
Of course I'm not an NFL coach, like Mr. Ryan.

There's just something so not smooth about Sanchez. As for the Jets.
Try to imagine, that last year, for no fucking reason, they traded for Tebow, didn't use him, traded him to the Patriots, and then draft a quarterback who is quite possibly worse than Tebow. They are literally going backwards.
If you're looking for an added chuckle, Geno Smith fired his agents because he was drafted in the second round, and not in the top 10, like he had hoped.

I really do think Rex wants out of New York. He's an idiot, but if that's true I honestly can't blame him.

Rex is basically his dad: great D coordinator, horrible coach and too full of himself to realize it. Actually, I don't know if he's a horrible head coach because there's no way to separate his pluses and minuses from the rest of the circus, but I do know Patriots fans hope he never leaves.

Rex is another case of NorvusTurneritis. Norv was so good on paper that he kept getting chances, f'up after f'up, so archetypical of this problem that I'm naming the disease after him.

I watched the first Olbermann from last night and he did a really good takedown of Manish Mehta over this reporting and previous stories. The only thing that makes the New York media madder than Ryan playing Mark Sanchez is Ryan not playing him.

The Jets sent Mark Sanchez into the 3rd Quarter of their pre-season game against the Giants tonight after Geno Smith accidentally stepped out of the end zone for a safety and threw three interceptions.
Playing behind the reserve offensive line didn't go so well and Sanchez was flattened by Giants defensive lineman Marvin Austin, injured his shoulder and had to leave the game.
Sanchez had been told he would not play in the game and was the consensus favourite to start week one for the Jets, but will now have scans to determine the extent of the injury.
When asked, Head Coach Rex Ryan said he had sent Sanzhez in because he "wanted to win the game."
The pre-season game.
They did win, 24-21 in overtime. So there's that.
