The player United probably should have splashed £24,000,000 on.

If you can play, you can play at Duke

Well, I think they need RvP, regardless of Rooney's availability, and he and Shinji Kagawa should pair well, but Fellaini has been terrific since moving up the field a bit (he wasn't bad before). He's a fantastic target and a great tackler.

All of which means he and Baines will be moving somewhere tomorrow just to keep the world spinning on its axis.

The one from a couple weeks ago about Tebow made me almost do a spit-take. The title and the last paragraph are the gold standard of comedy.

Kevin Garnett has made the most money of all time by an NBA player, according to RealGM.com, raking in over $328M in his 17 year career. Chris Webber (#9) and Shaq (#2) are the only retired players in the top 10.

Joe Johnson at #6 kinda surprised me, but the fact that Jordan didn't hit $100 million downright amazes me. Of course, that doesn't account for those missing two years that we won't talk about.

Hard to imagine that Ilgauskas, whose sneakers have never squeaked on a gym floor, has earned more than Ewing.

So... have you guys been watching what Felix Hernandez has been doing in the month of August? He is making it very, very, very hard not to imagine him as the 2012 Cy Young winner.

In 5 starts this month, here is his line:

DATEOPPONENTRESULTIPHRERHRBBSOGBFBPitBFGScDec.ERA
Aug 27@ MINW 1-09.05000151841003281W(13-5)2.43
Aug 21vs CLEW 5-17.27110159141052965W(12-5)2.54
Aug 15vs TBW 1-09.00000012871132799W(11-5)2.60
Aug 10@ LAAL 6-57.055411310141042851 -2.74
Aug 4@ NYYW 1-09.020002611111013087W(10-5)2.63

As of tonight, he now has the lowest ERA in the AL, most IP, most shutouts (5), and is third in K's (11 behind the leader). In August he has gone 4-0 by throwing THREE complete game, 1-0 shutouts, including a perfect game and a two-hitter. His only no-decision was a mediocre start where he allowed 5 runs in 7 innings but left to a 5-5 tie, and the game was lost in the 9th, 6-5. And look at the pitch count: the most pitches was in his 12K perfect game, with a mere 113! He'd be going for the pitching Triple Crown if he didn't play for a team that offensively resembles the Bad News Bears.

The mere fact that he's gotten 3 wins via 1-0 shutout in just this month makes one wonder: if Felix got to face the Mariners every time out, would he be challenging Nolan Ryan's career no-hitter record in just this season?

That's just ridiculous. I meant to ask in the perfect game thread, when's the last time a bad team wasted the Golden Years of a pitcher (even close to) this good? I feel like I'm missing a couple of obvious ones in the '80s and '90s, but nothing's coming to me.

You're selling him a bit short by only using August.

Here is the list of all the 1-0 shutouts by pitchers in 2012:

Rk Player Date Tm Opp Rslt AppDec
1 Lucas Harrell 2012-06-27 HOU SDP W 1-0 SHO9 W
2 Felix Hernandez 2012-06-28 SEA BOS W 1-0 SHO9 W
3 Edinson Volquez 2012-07-19 SDP HOU W 1-0 SHO9 W
4 Felix Hernandez 2012-08-04 SEA NYY W 1-0 SHO9 W
5 Felix Hernandez 2012-08-15 SEA TBR W 1-0 SHO9 W
6 Felix Hernandez 2012-08-27 SEA MIN W 1-0 SHO9 W

There have been six of them for the entire season, and King Felix has thrown four of them himself.

Here is an old article on win shares as a % of team shares. Steve Carlton went 27-10 in 1972 on a team that combined to go 32-89 when he wasn't pitching.
