...consensus value or something.
The current trend of evaluating draft picks by supposed value, that is whether the consensus places that player above or below where he is chosen, might have some merit, but it denies any consideration of what a team's needs were at the time of the pick. If a team needed an outside linebacker, for example, but the only players that were considered to have 'positive value' were running backs, of which you already have plenty, then it makes no sense to adhere strictly to a value judgment. It's a little bit like buying a neat sports car at a bargain price when you really need a pickup truck for your landscaping business.
This sort of analysis also presumes that the 'experts' know what they're talking about. Break the word 'expert' into its parts and you have 'ex', meaning former, and 'spurt', which is a drip under pressure. As an illustration, may I offer Kiper, Mel.

President Obama and his wife root for different Chicago baseball teams. "I grew up a Cubs fan," she said. "We're a mixed marriage."

I'm guessing that at one time, the Obama dinner table was able to maintain an uneasy truce.
She: "You've got a lot to live down in the personal conduct department. Ozzie, Pierzynski..."
He: "Zambrano, Milton Bradley..."
