Dice-K Will Undergo Tommy John Surgery: Boston Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka will have Tommy John surgery to fix a significant tear in his ulnar collateral ligament and be out a year, a "baseball source" told ESPN Boston. Dice-K, who is in the fifth year of a six-year $103 million contract, won 33 games for the Red Sox his first two seasons but only 16 since.
Judging from his inconsistent results over the past couple of seasons and his stints on the DL, Matsuzaka has had something wrong for a while. He evidently thought he could fight his way through it, thus did not report it. This is conjecture on my part, but it wouldn't be out of character for Matsuzaka. I hope that his attempt at "heroism" while pitching hurt won't cost him any more of his career.

I'm guessing we won't see him in the major leagues (at least in the US) again.

I think it was during the World Baseball Classic that he was pitching so much, so early in the year, and I don't really think he ever overcame the fatigue and stress that placed on his arm.

Now show me Passan's column from 2006 saying the same thing. Everyone was after him. At the time, I was shocked the Sox were able to land him. And now I'm pleased to have 18 months where I don't have to skip every 5th Sox game.

That's too bad for him. Obviously the "gyroball" puts a lot of stress on the arm/elbow. Wasn't that what the pitch he supposedly threw called? I forget.
