Enjoy 'Real Football' While You Can: The New York Times invited one of the frequent sports commenters on its web site to give his take on the upcoming season. Ian Nicol used the opportunity th suggest that the sport as we know it is doomed. "[G]rab a beer and enjoy what may be one of the last seasons of the nasty old game," Ian Nicol writes. "Just another one of those things -- like the Soviet Union or the joys of driving a gas guzzler -- that may be impossible to explain to future generations."
Yes, because real football is flying wedges and people dying on the field. REAL!
To be honest, I kind of get what he was trying to say-that football will quickly become a corporate entity of utter blandness and safety. The only problem is, that I think that already exists (at least the utter blandness). Especially compared to its college counterpart, pro football is a not a game-it's a carefully crafted product designed to appeal to the market.
I just don't think this guy stated that very well. Slate has some articles up right now that discuss it better, IMHO.
Though his commenters don't seem to see the point...

I understand that people wish the days of 3 yards and a cloud of dust are back, but today's offenses seems so much more productive. But on the other hand the rules today give offenses the upper hand by letting recievers run wide open out of the gates pretty much.
