Galaxy Defeat Red Bulls in Star-Studded Game: The Los Angeles Galaxy defeated the New York Red Bulls 1-0 Saturday night in a showcase of the league's newest marquee stars. Edson Buddle scored the goal in the 10th minute for the Galaxy. "We've heard a lot of talk about the New York Red Bulls over the last month, and we wanted to reiterate to people who the best team in the league is," said Galaxy star Landon Donovan. The growing popularity of the MLS is leading to a loosening of the purse strings to put more stars like the Red Bulls' Thierry Henry on teams. Author Clemente Lisi asks, "MLS will without a doubt be a better product with more Designated Players, but at what price?" (A retiring MLS star, wonder goal scorer Clint Mathis, was honored at the game.)
You're not supposed to glorify it, jerk!

NOTES: Three fans ran across the field in the 89th minute and were led off by security.
I assume they were properly tased by the security guards, as they obviously posed a serious threat to the athletes and officials on the pitch.

So is the big MLS rivalry between LA and NY? Not exactly Blackburn and Burnley for stirring up local passions, but still.

A bit like Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory, mate.

Wouldn't really call it the biggest rivalry. Actually I wouldn't call it a rivalry at all. Both teams just happen to have the biggest stars in the league right now. NY's biggest rival is DC United. LA has Chivas USA.

@truebloodroo, did you see the Big Blue last week? Those two have faced off so much recently I think they might get confused about which shirt to wear ;)

Are you referring to an A-League match, billsaythis?

A- League local derby: Perth Glory and Wellington Phoenix. Surely that must be the longest journey for a ''domestic'' competition anywhere in the world. Well, since Vladivostok got relegated from the Russian Premier Division, at least.

trueblueroo, I am indeed. Fox Soccer Channel is (for now at least) showing one A-League match a week, picking up the feed from their Aussie corporate sibling, and, well, what other soccer is on US TV late (Pacific time) on a Saturday night?

ESPN Pacific (that's the ocean) also replays an MLS game once a week. Now I get ESPN SE Asia, I can't see either A-League or MLS.
