Alabama Tops First Coaches Poll: Defending national champion Alabama is No. 1 atop the preseason USA Today coaches poll released Friday. The rest of the top 5 are Ohio State, Florida,
Texas and Boise State. "Last year is basically over," said Alabama coach Nick Saban.
As Boise State's stature grows, hope they keep playing the midweek games that helped put them on the map. It's fun watching a good team like BSU late at night on the east coast on a Weds. or Thurs. night.

I wish the polls that decide the national championship game would wait until the third or fourth week of the season to launch. It's wrong that positioning in the first poll plays so much of a role in where teams end up. Boise State returned 21 starters, far more than any team above it, and dropped from fourth last season to fifth now. It makes no sense at all. How can Florida without Tebow and Texas without McCoy have less questions going in to the season?

"Last year is basically over," said Alabama coach Nick Saban.
Which is patently untrue, because, as we all know, the preseason poll is basically the tossed snowball at the mountaintop which builds to the avalanche of complaints after the final regular season poll. At least it might be worth speculating which team(s) gets stiffed out of a big bowl (or handed one) in December because of these rankings. Cincy? One of the non-Oregonian PAC-10 teams?
