French team may not want to come home. If they do, better do it by boat.

The red card against France really makes clear that Clint Dempsey was lucky not to draw one against Slovenia. I was wrong about that.

France keep finding new and entertaining ways to self-destruct.

The announcers in the France game just said that Thierry Henry might be coming to play for the MLS in New York. Great for us, but what happened to the guy?

He's about to be 33?

Yeah, my response would have been, "He died two years ago." He was starting to fade around the last World Cup and has been a part-time player the last couple of years.
And France just scored. Damnit.

Goooo RSA! Bafana bafana!!!!
Man I would love to see them advance, but even more if they beat France to do it.

Well I've got some terrible news then.

Different game, different ref, different set of FIFA briefing notes drawn from what happened in the previous matches. That's not to celebrate inconsistency, but it's a recognition that each match sets up its own officiating dynamic. When matches are this compressed together, there's more opportunity (and reason) to juxtapose decisions than in a club season, but trying to extrapolate backwards doesn't really tell you anything. Players will be on notice about the elbow from now on, though.
Even without the black comedy of the French performance -- there are reports of ironic cheers in French offices and airports -- the best two teams came out of the group. It would have been a lovely surprise had the South Africans got in, but it was great that both Uruguay and Mexico came out and played for a result.

Good to see we've got the professional vuvuzelers in for the Argentina-Greece game. That modulating up and down pulse of sound is almost pleasant.

I've noticed the vZ dB levels seem to be higher over the last two days. Maybe it is ringers. Nigeria game's not so loud, but that's probably due to Nigerian fans trying to swallow theirs.

Grum: What's the story on that goal? That is fantastic. What incredible luck/presence of mind.

Ronaldo had a great game but let's not forget this was the sixth goal against a tired, weaker team from a team that had it all to play for--the total goals will be a big help if Portugal lose to Brazil and Ivory Coast beat NK.

Boston Bruins have shipped Dennis Wideman off to Florida for Nathan Horton and Gregory Campbell. Also in the deal were the #15 pick in this year's draft to Florida and Florida's 3rd round pick in 2011 to Boston. Wideman was dogged all year by disastrous giveaways that frequently led to opposition scores, while Horton has been labeled as underachieving and having a questionable work ethic. Campbell might do Boston some good when it comes to penalties and suspensions, since he is the son of the NHL chief disciplinarian, Colin Campbell.

Well, it didn't take me nearly as long to get fed up with the diving at World Cup as it did four years ago. Progress!
I did think of a path to WC redemption, though. The next time there's a BS card shown as a result of a flopper, I want to see members of the carded team start diving as if the ref was headbutting and shinkicking them like there was no tomorrow - every single time one of the team runs past him.
