So between playing the a-hole boyfriend in Coming to America and Dr. Peter Benton on ER, Eriq LaSalle had time to be Jose Rene Higuita of the Colombian team in the 1990 World Cup. Good to know.

Glendale approves Reinsdorf group's Coyotes proposal, votes down Ice Edge Reinsdorf's deal would provide millions of dollars annually to the group through the creation of a "community facilities district." It would change the team name to either the Glendale Coyotes or Arizona Coyotes, with the NHL's approval, and would keep the team in the suburban Phoenix city.

Get this:
Plaxico Burress accidently shoots Santonio Holmes in the leg at a night club causing Mr. Holmes to throw a drink in Ben Roethlisberger's face which caused Mr. Roethlisberger to accidentally grope the waitress. The scream of the waitress startled Jeff Reed, causing him to accidentally smash the men's room towel dispenser, startling Matt Spaeth who then lost control of his bladder and peed in the parking lot.
Here we go Steelers, here we go!!!

Since the name of Rene Higuita has been invoked, it is mandatory to link to this.
The full version of the Gary Smith article Tom Humphries is referencing in JJ's link above is here. I believe someone posted this on SpoFi as well back when the whole Tiger thing hit. I believe I originally came across it in the Best American Sports Writing of the Century, in which it is one of the included pieces.

Re the Panini: Other than Ruud Gullit I don't think anyone beats the Colombian keepers for the hair medal. Dudes, represent!

Debo, a friend of mine in the 'Burgh posted that explanation on Facebook yesterday. You know what was shocking to me? They couldn't somehow find a way to blame it on the Bengals. I thought we were the problem.

Jerry Jones throws dirt at Parcells and Tebow, considers Romo a miracle ...
Hey Jerry .... time to get that last facelift loosened a few notches, it's cutting off the oxygen flow just above the neckline.

How To Suck The Joy Out Of Watching Sports
They're not all bad. I rarely read the Boston Herald on-line, but I do look at the Globe on-line daily. Some of the newer additions (Peter Abraham on the Red Sox, Albert Breer on the Patriots) actually report most of the time, and leave the opinions to the columnists. Chad Finn, while certainly no cheerleader, also tends to be more optimistic than the rest of them, and he has been known to toss a few hand grenades at the sports broadcast media types. While Bob Ryan occasionally falls into the negativity trap, at least he can write, and rarely gives an opinion that is not substantiated with some facts. The Dan Shaughnessy's and Tony Massarotti's of this world are usually not worth my time, and the first paragraph or two of either one of them will let me know whether or not to continue reading.
Thanks for linking to Allen's site. I'll have to look at it periodically.

Yeah, Bruce is mainly bitching about CHB, Maz and the cast of 'EEI. You can tell by his Twitter stream who he likes and who he doesn't. I agree with you that the Globe has done a good job of grooming young writers who actually like the sport they cover. If they could only get Amalie Benjamin to write the weekly baseball notes and drop Nick Cafardo (preferably out a window), I'd be pretty happy with them. I've developed an ad-block like plugin for my brain that causes me to not see columns by CHB.

Gene Kiniski dead at 81
If Kiniski doesn't exemplify all that was so interesting, so golden, about his era, I can't imagine who does?

Even as a Liverpool fan with a (surely now lost) bet with his (Spurs supporting) boss that my team will finish above his in the league, I could watch that goal all day. And probably will. Almunia's punch highlighted yet again that he is a liability, but no one would have saved the volley.

Interesting article from Tom Humphries at the Irish Times about Tiger: Fourteen years ago the great American sportswriter Gary Smith penned a wonderful piece on the young phenomenon... "Can you hear the grinding?" he wrote. "That's the relentless churning mechanism of fame girding to grind the purity and the promise to dust . . . it is a fitting moment to pose a question. Who will win? The machine . . . or the youth who has just entered its maw?"
