McKeever decision breaks your heart

Yes, it's sad.
But at the same time, it's also respectful.
Would it have been embarrassing to him if the coach came to him and said:
"Well, we think we can win a medal with the other four guys, but I want to make history and put you in instead of [other teammate]. We probably won't win a medal, but we'll look like good guys and everyone can point at the handicapped guy and say how inspirational it is."

If McKeever wasn't blind, and if he wasn't the center of attention because of his story, then the coach not choosing him wouldn't even be mentioned.

I think it's a big deal that he was treated like every other athlete, and not as some media circus sideshow attraction.

I think you should always field your best team. It's an obligation to the team I think you have as a coach. And it's not just about getting a chance to win a medal, but a chance to perform the best that you can on the biggest stage. That's the point. They're not there to create great stories for people to consume. That's the happy by product of honest competition. But if it was scripted, what real value does it have? Not just for us, but for those involved?

Somebody needs to tell NBC's television producers. The Olympics is a string of gauzy human interest stories occasionally interrupted by sport.
