Brazil a lock for 2014 World Cup.: Brazil looks to be almost a certain lock to host the 2014 World Cup after the South American Football Federation (CSF), the continent's governing body, backed the country's bid to host soccer's biggest tournament. After FIFA decided South America would host the 2014 competition last month, today's meeting of the 10 country federations from the continent produced an unanimous vote on behalf of Brazil to hold the World Cup. Like they need more of an advantage.

I'm buying my ticket now. I'm going to go down in Feb or March for Carnival. And stay all the way through the World Cup. Brazil. Beach. Babes. Boobs. Bikinis. Barbeque. Booze. Ball. Hahahahaha.

I'm sure the wife won't mind that at all, WC. I've got some friends from Brazil. Must...keep....in....contact.

I suppose it makes sense rotating the World Cup around the continents. From a personal point of view though, I'm pissed off I'll have to be up half the night to watch the games and take huge amounts of leave. Anyone know how far Brazil is behind GMT? The beach babes will be some compensation though.

Brazil is the same as New York time i think...so that would probably be 6 hours later than GMT...

Cheers StarFucker. That means that a 7.30PM KO in Brazil will start at 1.30AM here. Oh well, perhaps I'll win the lottery and retire before then.

Well now you know how we felt last summer, squealy. Besides, you get all kinds of great start times during the next two WCs. Our time was bound to happen. Who thinks Mexico will get it again in 2018?

I doubt it would go to another Central/South American country, or any Americas country for that matter, immediately after being held in Brazil. My guess is it'll rotate to Europe. Or maybe Oceania. Australia? New Zealand? btw, where's World Cup 2010 being held?

Actually, Rio and Sao Paolo are 3 hours behind GMT, 2 hours ahead of east coast time in the USA, so a 7:30pm kick-off will be 10:30pm in the UK and 5:30pm in New York.

Shit, 10:30pm is a fooking great time to watch the World Cup!! I hope i am living in Europe by that time...

I can just imagine everyone spilling out onto the streets from the pubs after midnight if England are playing....

Didn't FIFA declare it would start rotating among the continents? So according to that, 2002 = Asia; 2006 = Europe; 2010 = Africa; 2014 = South America; 2018 = North America or Australia. Woohoo! Mexico, Canada or here? (I'd bet on Mexico).

That's what I was thinking, trox. Thanks for helping me convince myself I'm not delusional. If North America does get it in 2018, Mexico should surely host over the U.S. Canada would be cool, though, eh? I think it'd be quite cool for the five Central American countries to co-host, though it'd be a bitch on who is automatically qualified.

posted by Ufez Jones at 12:02 PM on March 18, 2003

There are no more automatic qualifiers...

posted by StarFucker at 01:29 PM on March 18, 2003

It won't be Canada. We don't have the infrastructure in place... And I think that the host still qualifies automatically, just not the winner.

I believe sauril is correct. But 2010: Africa?!! Where are they going to have it? South Africa?

posted by worldcup2002 at 01:52 PM on March 18, 2003

Indeed, sauril was correct:

As at France 1998 and Korea/Japan 2002, 32 nations will compete in Germany, with only the hosts qualifying automatically. Defending champions Brazil are required to enter the qualifying tournament this time around.

Well, that DOES make sense...
