Fantasy Basketball H2H league: This is it: smithers and I head to head for the league championship, along with three other matchups for 3rd, 7th and 9th place.
I thought The_Black_Hand had a chance after Vince Carter's monster game on Saturday, but my lead was too big to be seriously threatened by then, especially with Arenas out. Good matchup. I probably don't have a chance against smithers, but I'm going to do my best. A threepeat would be too sweet.

I totally own 11th place

Yeah, Arenas and Tyson Chandler don't go down, things might be a little different. Que sera sera.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Chandler, the human squeegee. Now I just need to put a hex on Dirk, KG, Odom, Barbosa and Josh Howard and I'll be set. No seriously... looking at that lineup, massive injuries across the board are my only chance.

C'mon SEVEN ... seven seven seven seven seven seven seven!!!!!!! Hoo-fucking-rah ... it may only be the consolation cup, but I'm pumped for it! The fellas are really gonna have to work for it this round though ... there's somethin' in the water in Crap City that makes the Cavaliers a tough team to handle. Good luck to both smithers and dusted as you go for gold. *my money is on smithers ... any takers?

*my money is on smithers ... any takers? Awww man, that's just cold. Does anyone know if this week goes all the way to next Wednesday? I seem to recall the championship week was a longer one in years past.

I did wish you good luck though, dusted ... so it's not that cold. Let's wait to see if there are any who pick your squad. It's a whole new world of fantasy sport experience ... betting on fantasy teams. Anybody think that'd fly? ;)

Does anyone know if this week goes all the way to next Wednesday? I seem to recall the championship week was a longer one in years past. Yeah, it runs through the 18th (verify it yourself by checking the league bracket, week 24 and it'll show you Apr 9 - Apr 18). Thanks for reminding me to check, I'm in the final in my Friends league (as the six seed, to boot!).

Well, spitz, a slight tip in your favour after the first game night. Forget to set my lineup. I hope this does not come down to Diop's 2 pts that I didn't get last night. Though that might be a fitting conclusion.
posted by gspm at 07:46 AM on April 10, 2007
Well, hell, that wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Smithers' big three/four/five played and none of them got a triple double. Dallas has nothing to play for, so Dirk's taking a day off tomorrow... things are looking up.
posted by dusted at 11:27 AM on April 10, 2007
Thanks, gspm. I'll take any advantage I can get, however slight it may be. However, I think the abysmal performance by my starters tonight may have swung things back your way. Mourning ... 0 pts ... only 1 block!?!? Jefferson is still hurt too ... and Gasol had a sub-par night for sure. Oh well ... guess this is a long week for us, so we'll have to hope things get better as the days go by.

This is *very* frustrating.....Nowitzki and KG shutting it down? Fantasy seasons should end kind of before this behaviour kicks in, no? Oh well, shed no tears for me...... ;) Let dusted's 3rd coronation begin!!
posted by smithers at 08:22 AM on April 12, 2007
KG might be done, but unfortunately for me, Dirk just took one game off. It sucks, and I'd much prefer to win straight up. But we're still neck-and-neck with a week to go, so I don't want to jinx myself.

spitz, re: betting on fantasy teams. I once had an idea about creating a fantasy spofi fantasy sports league. Basically you'd pick a spofi per sport and win points based on their standings in various competitions. I even thought about going back and ranking everyone from previous results.

Well, at least all my injuries (Livingston, Arenas, Chandler, Watson, and now Korver) have come at the end of the season, when there's nothing at stake. Stoopid NBA.

dusted: things still are close in a lot of categories, so I dug out the rules to see what happens if there was a tie. In the event that a playoff game ends in a tie, the deadlock is broken using the following system: 1. Most team points scored. 2. Most team rebounds. 3. Highest team field goal percentage. 4. Highest team free throw percentage. 5. Fewest team turnovers. 6. Most team 3-point shots made. 7. Most team assists. 8. Most team steals. 9. Most team blocked shots. 10. Random "coin flip." The funny thing is that #1,2 are where we are most likely to have a tie category, thus pushing us to #3. Not that I think it will get that far, but interesting nonetheless.
posted by smithers at 07:06 AM on April 13, 2007
Yeah, it really is incredibly close after 4 days of playing: 2 points, 7 rebounds, 4 three-pointers, 5 blocks, 6 turnovers. Of course, if Dirk and KG were playing, it wouldn't even be a contest. Can we move #7 to #1? Then I'd have a good reason for keeping Brevin Knight on my team. I'm screwed if it comes down to FG%.

10. Random "coin flip." What if the coin landed on its side like in MouseTrap? The internet may come to an end.

With the add/drops, I'm still a couple of games down on smithers. This should be a crazy finish.

When Garnett decides to shut it down championship week, you have to be a little strategic, I guess. (You'll get a nice taste of that tonight when Sam Mitchell lets Bosh play about 25 minutes, btw.) We are basically deadlocked with an equal amount of games left tonight and tomorrow night. What a finish!!
posted by smithers at 09:06 AM on April 17, 2007
No problem with the strategy, as long as we're both using it (and we are). This is the first day in a week you're ahead in the matchup... not good timing for me. I think it comes down to how much our stars play over the next couple of days. I seriously doubt Gerald Wallace will play more than a couple of minutes Wednesday, but what am I going to do - bench him?
posted by dusted at 02:30 PM on April 17, 2007
Exactly....I had to hang on to KG for a few days just in case he pulled an appearance out for the love of the fans or something. I'm hoping that Dallas uses tonight as a tuneup and just sets out to thrash Golden State (especially since they haven't beaten them yet this year), but I'm not counting on it.
posted by smithers at 02:37 PM on April 17, 2007
Shit, Bosh didn't play at all.
posted by dusted at 09:46 PM on April 17, 2007
Neither did J-Ho or Dirk.
posted by smithers at 11:14 PM on April 17, 2007
Ouch. Maybe next year we can move the playoffs one week earlier? It's a little ridiculous for me to grab Joe Smith in case I want to play him over Bosh.

I don't think the commissioner has control over league-end date...it would have to be a system-wide thing for Yahoo, which I imagine they will be hearing about, especially since the Sports Guy griped about it a while ago, didn't he?
posted by smithers at 09:36 AM on April 18, 2007
They allow for that kind of thing in football, but it's probably a more-widely accepted practice. Would be nice to see here too though. If we're griping to Yahoo combine that short week for the All Star break with another. I still frimly believe that's why I missed the playoffs. That and my team sucked that particular week.

I'm going to give up the lead on TOs.....after being decent in that stat all year.
posted by smithers at 10:31 PM on April 18, 2007
From the way I see the standings, I can win on FT%, points or TOs, and I'm unlikely to lose on anything (although blocks, steals and rebounds aren't exactly safe). We'll see in the morning.
posted by dusted at 11:51 PM on April 18, 2007
Heh. Neither of you bought Stat-Tracker, eh? I know who won! But I won't tell. Mainly 'cos I'm pissed as shit that if I'd started Diop instead of Al "inconsitent" Harrington tonight, those 5 blocks would've landed me my fantasy gold in my friends' league. That said, it's not going to be near as annoying as the contest betwixt you two. Points took it. By 3. That is *amazing*. Three points. Three missed FT's. One three pointer. Personally I blame Joey Crawford.

3 points. Wow. Great season - the basketball league knows how to get it done at SpoFi. Can't wait till next year. p.s. Thanks for all those updates dusted!

Wow. I expected it to be close, but not this close. Great job, smithers - with all your stars quitting on you, you still almost won. First off, I'd like to thank Kevin Garnett for taking an early vacation on smithers - I couldn't have won without that, buddy. Second, I'd like to thank Joe Smith for having a great game, going 11-17, scoring 26 points. I subbed Smith for Jason Hart at the last second, and Hart went 0-6 and didn't score a single point. Just dumb luck: Smith hadn't scored 20 points all year.

I think I'm going to be sick.....I left Amir Johnson on the bench for Ninny Hilario because Amir sucked against the Raptors on Tuesday night, so I figured Detroit was beginning its tune-up. Ninny sits out and I leave Amir's 20 and 12 on the bench. (Mavericks-level stomach punch, eh Ufez?) Anyways, congrats dusted....even if Joe Smith was just dumb luck, you were in a position to take advantage of the dumb luck in the first place...no mean feat. And thanks for all of the work on the updates during the year! Hopefully I'll have another crack next at you next year....
posted by smithers at 11:40 AM on April 19, 2007
I didn't think of it that way, but yes, Amir would have won the league for you. Ouch. Chris Webber (who I benched for the first time since I traded for him) didn't play, which gave Amir lots of playing time. With it this close, if any one of our last day moves were different, you would have won.

Chris Webber (who I benched for the first time since I traded for him) Somehow that statement and WIN don't seem to go together.
