CFL Pick 'Em, Week 9: Fear! Intrigue! Suspense! Single points awarded for preventing a kick return from leaving the endzone! All this and more, inside!

Back in the CF, back in the CFL. Montreal doesn't even bother to toy with Toronto's third-stringers. Winnipeg continues to be befuddled by the Tiger-Cats' vicious... well, something about the Tiger-Cats, anyway. B.C. and Calgary get the job done at home, reasserting their dominant positions in the West, for this week anyway.

MrFrisby nailed the B.C. spread to jump temporarily into first place, but missed out on the Calgary win to drop back into second. Three-way ties for second and seventh, with a small chasm in between: this is not entirely meaningful, but I don't know what else to point out. Well, chico's only ten points off the lead, I guess.

Finally, some intriguing matchups in this dumb eight-team schedule. WEEK 9 B.C. @ Winnipeg (Thursday, August 10) Winnipeg has shown that it can handle Hamilton. Will this help them against a strong Lions team? Probably not. Saskatchewan @ Edmonton (Friday, August 11) Two convincing losses last week mean that both these teams have a lot of work to do. The good news is that one of them will probably win this week, although I wouldn't necessarily bet against the tie. Toronto @ Hamilton (Saturday, August 12) Only the second time that Toronto has met Hamilton this season, and boy have they missed 'em. Now if only they had players who weren't, you know, injured. Montreal @ Calgary (Saturday, August 12) Match-up of the week. If Henry Burris is on his game, this could be the Alouettes' first loss of the season. That's not a small "if", though. Good luck!

My time on top will be very short. While I will make this weeks picks they will likely be my last. Unless I can get internet access at the hospital I have to spend the next couple of months in. I have hopes, just didnt want yall to think I was ignoring the games. B.C by 18 Edmonton by 6 Hamilton by3 Calgary by 21 Have fun and good luck to you all.

You heard it here first, folks! Yes, that's right ... this is the week I make a run at the top of the charts! The dry spell can't last forever! Lions by 10 Eskimos by 8 TiCats by 3 Alouettes by 11 Yep, that's the way it's gonna be!

This is a tough week - Hamilton coming off a huge win, Calgary has their mojo going, but against the super-strong Als? Toronto is beat up and who knows which Edmonton or Saskatchewan team is going to show up? So with that in mind.... B.C. by 8 Edmonton by 4 Hamilton by 8 Montreal by 6 (never bet against a streak)

I'm still holding out hope that I'll nail all four spreads and take the lead. (It could happen, y'know.) Also, maybe monkeys may fly out of my butt. Winnipeg by 4 Saskatchewan by 11 Hamilton by 10 Montreal by 8

B.C. @ Winnipeg (too late, dagnabbit) Edmonton by 3 Hamilton by 21 Montreal by 9 I know the Devils are going to win, so why am I so upset they are down to the Rangers 2-1 going into the 3rd?

So I'm sitting here, in garbage time, one Winnipeg TD away from nailing the spread, and the Lions defence seems to have lost all interest in the game, and things look pretty good for me until Mike Quinn fades back to pass and then watches as the ball is gently removed from his throwing hand by a defensive back and returned to the other end zone.

I knew picking the Sas/Edm tie was a bad idea. But how awesome would it have been if it was right? Of course, DrJohn would have gotten all the credit, as he gave me the idea, but still!

Well, I'm pretty sure that you do receive the distinction of being the first person in the history of the SpoFi CFL Pick 'Em to pick a tie. It's also worth noting that there have been no ties in the CFL since the Pick 'Em started: last tie I recall was a Toronto-Hamilton game in 2004. We've never really discussed how ties should be handled. Since the algorithm would produce a Margin of Error of 0 to 0, the default specifications say that you get 3 points for picking a tie, and 0 points otherwise. If we wanted to make ties more interesting, we could define a tie's Margin of Error to be 0 to 1, and award a single point to anybody who picked a point spread of 1. This would make tie games slightly more relevant to our results, since—and I mean no offence to our respective punditry skills when I say this, apoch—the odds of somebody picking a tie correctly are practically not worth considering. Of course, given the rarity of ties themselves, perhaps this whole discussion is not worth considering. But it's been something I've been wondering about for a while. I need a real job again.

Since ties are so rare, maybe it is right to award 3 points for picking it correctly and no point spread. And as far as punditry skills go, my deserve no respect, so no offense taken.

Game of the week lives up to its billing, as Sandro DeAngelis ties and breaks his season record long with the game-tying and game-winning field goals, respectively. Ridiculous!
