CFL Pick 'Em, Week 6: Picks not going your way this season? Thought you were down and out? Think again: we head into the final weekend of the first third of the season with a four-way tie for first place on our hands. Don't make me design a tiebreaker formula for this thing.

Actually, I have Isiah Thomas & Matt Millen on speed-dial this week. If Neil Smith starts answering his voicemail sometime soon, he'll be with me at the table for next week. We'll see how that works out. 'Wets by 17. The race is not always to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, but that's the way to bet. Bombers by 9. I'm guessing they have the 'Mo's number. Lions by 4. Late touchdown swings it. (Hell, I don't know. I haven't seen more than a few seconds of highlight footage of either of these teams this year.) Riders by 6. Much as I love Damon Allen, and much as I respect that he did go to high school with Buck O'Neil, and he looks almost as good for his age, I somehow doubt it'll be enough to do any more than keep it close.

The touchstone didn't work last week. Teach me for being a two-timing bastard. Which chico, amongst his other insults, did not choose to call me. Very well, I've done it myself. Montreal by 5 Edmonton by 3 BC by 7 The Sasmeisters by 10 I know nothing about the horse. And neither, apparently, does Carrie. This is a bit like a Henry Green dialogue, but with football. I'll quit now.

I have no idea what will happen this week, so I'm throwing caution to the wind and picking according to Pro-Line. Montreal by 16 Winnipeg by 22 Calgary by 3 Toronto? Toronto? Toronto... by 1? No, Toronto by 4. Yeah.

Oh my goodness. What an ending. What an ending. Did anyone see that ending? That was ridiculous.

Yes, I saw it ... unfortunately ... I was there to watch it happen live. Un-fucking-believable!?!? Dr. John ... you've opened the door for me to rant on this one ... 1. the officiating was deplorable! i'm a ref, so i usually give the stripes the benefit of the doubt, but this was one of the single worst displays of officiating i've ever witnessed. what compounded it even more was the video review. the most shameful thing was when winnipeg's defense was not ready to defend a hurry-up offense by edmonton after a long gain ... so berry threw the challenge flag ... on a clearly indisputable play ... just so his team could recover (you shoulda seen the grin on his face after he threw the flag!). it was total BS! enabled by the flowery "let's get used to the video replay" rules ... BS! 2. the CFL is supposed to be an exciting game. and you were a damn fool to leave the stadium before this one was over. that said, until those final minutes, this was one of the most boring games i've ever watched. as stated above, the number of (unnecessary) flags, the lengthy video reviews, and the number of punts by Fleming had most folks snoozin' by half time. 3. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot??? As a diehard Eskimo fan, that last play was a real heartbreaker. However, it wasn't "the" game-winning play if you take the whole game into consideration. (a) the Esks fail to manage the clock at the end of the first half and leave the red zone with ZERO points. (b) third and goal from the one yard line, a chance to take the lead late in the fourth quarter ... and you kick a field goal??? (c) you send a full rush/blitz on the final play of the game with the bombers needing a hail mary to win??? no wonder stegall (one of the greatest receivers this league has ever seen) got free (might have had a little to do with DBs being scared as hell of the refs throwin' a pass interference flag too). (d) the Esks scored 4 points in the first half ... nobody deserves to win a CFL football game only scoring four points in any half. what made that final play the most heartbreaking for me though, was the fact that until Stegall broke free ... I WOULD HAVE ACTUALLY NAILED THE SPREAD FOR ONCE!!!! my chance to break out of the SpoFi pool cellar ... BUT NOOOOO!?!? Okay ... I guess I've ranted enough. Only in the CFL, folks ... only in the CFL!

I can just picture you in the stands, Spitz, thinking about the spread and praying for that two-point convert to be good. But I agree: a lot of the game was really lousy. Even down to the last little bit: both teams had meaningful possessions in the last three minutes that they couldn't do anything with. They had to wait for the last-minute heroics.

Not a bad week to catch a game, really. Hamilton stole their first win under the gritty paunch of Ron Lancaster. I turned off the Saskatchewan-B.C. game, because it was late and looking like another typical B.C. win, but hey! There's life in dem 'Riders yet. The same could not be said for Winnipeg, which experienced a typical Montreal game.
