EPL Fantasy League Week 27: "Born to lose" takes top spot this week.
looking at the week scores of the top 10 teams can you guess which ones didn't have henry as captain?
posted by gspm at 07:05 AM on February 23, 2005
I actually didn't, gspm. Had I, I'd've gotten an extra 12 points, taken top spot for the week, and be in fifth. I didn't even realize that we just finished a gameweek. D'oh.

Actually, bill didn't either. *shakes fist*

ok. the guess which ones didn't have henry as a captain and the other schlubs on their teams didn't pick up the slack? while I have slipped from the top perch I must give a rah for the seemingly high level of competition this year. nobody is running away with it. i'm sure everybody in the top 5 or 6 figures to have a shot at it.
posted by gspm at 11:24 AM on February 23, 2005
All I can say is I'm keeping the pressure on the top 4. I don't know how, but I am. All my points came from four players: Henry, Edu, Clement and Wallwork. The rest were pedestrians. This gameweek is going to be interesting.

I fucked up somewhat last week. That's gonna take a little while to put right. Please God let all my non-Chelsea players play this week while I try to consolidate.

With 11 weeks to play, you've got your work cut out SF, you'll have to outscore Sauril (and everyone else in the top 5) by 23 points a week.

Given this week's performance, I'd say not bloody likely.

Wenger has passed his sell by date--why the heck didn't he buy a keeper last month?

Speaking of managers, and keeping in mind this is the first full season of EPL I have followed, Mourinho is a little whiny bitch. A winning little whiny bitch, but still.

I've been asking the same question for the last month bill... Of course, I have no idea who was available (though it seems Fergie has made up with Howard, so there goes that option).

Looks like Cahill has saved me from disaster this week. Bastard. I like Mourinho, he's just deliciously arrogant; Wenger hasn't lost it, not yet - even though they were awful against Southampton don't rule them out just yet.
posted by BigCalm at 10:07 AM on February 28, 2005
BC, then why Mourinho alwyas complaining about interaction with the ref? If its such an advantage, go do it yourself, and wait for the other manager to through a hissy fit. Complaining about gamesmanship is a big minus. Although it might be his version of gamesmanship...what do i know.
posted by garfield at 10:17 AM on February 28, 2005
Mourinho is definitely not your standard EPL manager. He is having a pretty good amount of success (trophies) for someone younger than me though. Is anyone else watching the WBA-Man City match? Quite a surprising, entertaining opening 15 minutes!

I just need a ton of goals and assists from Fowler and Shaun W-P.

You seem to be confusing WBA with Norwich bill. Surely I must get my much deserved highlighting on the next EPL FFL update.
posted by squealy at 06:06 PM on February 28, 2005
I was, Squealy, I realized it about 10 minutes after posting. The Norwich defense just sucked today, that last Fowler score should never have happened, though I think the Baggies (is that Norwich's nickname?) got the short end of some referee decisions that might have changed the result.
posted by billsaysthis at 08:05 PM on February 28, 2005
Baggies = WBA Canaries = Norwich Saints = Soton Toffees = Everton Reds = Liverpool Red Devils (also, Reds, grrr) = Man U Blues = Chelsea Gunners = Arsenal Spurs = Tottenham Boro = Middlesborough Magpies = Newcastle Cottagers = Fulham I think there are a bunch who get called the Blues, including Man City and Birmingham and Chelsea. But that's just being lazy. And I couldn't really be bothered with a boring nickname like that. And that's all I could pull from memory. Or be bothered with.

SWP got one assist Fucker. What are you talking about? I think you'll find wc2002 that originally Chelsea were nicknamed The Pensioners whilst Man City were The Sky Blues or The Citizens. Birmingham are the original Blues. So stick that in your pipe and smoke it. Woohoo! I finally got my highlighting, even if it was only for third place.
posted by squealy at 10:30 AM on March 01, 2005
if you're in top spot and yet this is the first time you've had your name highlighted then that is a good indication what such an honor is worth. just pride i guess. (though on the week if you'd had as many points as 4th highest - 43 - you'd only be topping the table by one point, so a well timed surge of highlightable competancy)
posted by gspm at 11:03 AM on March 01, 2005
I believe it means I've been consistently mediocre throughout the season, though pushing the higher bounds of mediocracy. As we all know, first place means nothing until after the fat lady has sung.

Them's the rules billy boy. Live by them and die by them. Must admit I don't really know what you're talking about though. Your absent players will have double gameweeks before the end of the season. So you lose nothing overall. Ta wc2002 and dream on.

So did I StarFucker - Kiki Musampa played the cross for Sibierski's goal, SWP assisted Fowler's first after being put through by Sibierski, SWP *did* put the ball across for Fowler's second, but Robert Green palmed the ball into Fowler's path. SWP deserved a bonus though IMHO.

Man City sure did miss SWP today! They just could not break through the Bolton back line and on the other end Mr. Miserable sure tormented the home crowd. Anyway, there are still three games left in this round, not played until next Tuesday and Wednesday, so it remains to be seen how well those of us who switched captains from Henry to Lampard will make out on that bet; the Chelskite will need a score of 6 to match Henry's hat trick.

so it remains to be seen how well those of us who switched captains from Henry to Lampard will make out on that bet indeed. i'm surprised by the number of you who chose Henry. The top point getter having a double gameweek versus the striker on a depleted Arsenal side who is coming back into top form.

my swap of SWP for Garcia on Liverpool has me at a net -2 for the week (including the 4 pt hit for making a second transaction last week) so Garcia had better do sumthin good in the second liverpool game this week.

I wonder whether Sauril put Hreidarsson on the bench deliberately or in error given that he has a double gameweek. Either way, I'm happy. Though maybe I shouldn't be seeing as evil Lord Fergie seems to have gone off Ronaldo and I have so many more pressing things to deal with first.

posted by sauril at 12:14 PM on March 09, 2005
I saw the whole thing. Just couldn't believe the three goals in under 20 minutes, wtf, did the defense leave their brains on snooze control? Ronaldhino tried to pick them off the floor but one guy can only do so much--his second goal was just masterful, try and find a video clip of it if you can. Carvalho and Chelsea got away with a lot, I thought, and not just the foul on Valdes but also, for instance, Glen Johnson's two booted late tackle through the legs right after he came on that was a clear yellow but not to Collina. If Johnson had gotten the yellow, he would have gone off later when he did get a yellow for delaying the free kick.

So... Anyone catch today's games on TV?! I had to listen to live commentary on the Liverpool game... How come Liverpool is never on ESPN?!?
posted by StarFucker at 04:19 PM on March 09, 2005
bill ...unless he would have been conscious that he was on a yellow and thus would have avoided doing anything, such as delaying a free kick, that would have drawn another yellow. (beware the "if only/then" argument)

sauril - Next Friday (March 18), they'll redraw the teams and figure out the bracket for the final 8.
posted by blarp at 04:28 PM on March 09, 2005
I watched the Arsenal game. They didn't deserve to go through. At least they can concentrate on losing the league now. It said on Sky tonight that they'll be drawing the quarter and semi-finals next Friday as blarp says. God knows how that works.
posted by squealy at 05:53 PM on March 09, 2005
gspm, of course that's true--every moment of action in a sports event is significant in that sense--but one wonders if Collina had handed Johnson a yellow whether Chelsea would've played a bit more cautiously (and there was one other incident, can't remember the specifics, that while watching I absolutely expected a Chelsea player to get a yellow). Perhaps then they wouldn't have gone forward so aggresively on the corner when Terry scored. We'll never know, but seems that this was not one of the vaunted referee's best outings. Liverpool, man they go up and down more than a freaking yoyo! I'm thrilled they won but how could they not have managed a single goal Saturday against Newcastle? Fourth place is slipsliding away, even as Everton did us the favor of losing to a terrible team.
