EPL Fantasy League Week 12: Crap City does it again.
If anyone wants any training on how to leave your top point-scorer on the bench (again) then I'm your man.

I think i have finally made a turnaround. I've gotten 50 points or so for the last 2 weeks. Maybe I can now move up the table. But like Fergie said, i think the Championship is now out of our reach.

Crap City does it again? I don't think I have ever topped the table. Or at least if I did I have conveniently forgotten. FWIW i am 12th amongst players that self-identify as Canadian. Take that Sauril! /hubris, cue downfall.

I was implying Manchester City drew with United at the weekend as well (again), as well as you eating into my lead by being top scorer this week! Fiddlesticks!

Nice work gspm. I've made a couple of really poor choices ricently, switching to players who've gone off the boil, and holding on to others too long... but at least I'm still beating wc2002!

graargh, sauril! You'll no' be claiming that next week. I may be suffering a slump now, but I am still in touch with the top 3. This week is my week! Gunning for #3!

I had a bit of luck this week. I picked up Svensson and he gets 15 pts. But I also had Dickov on the bench who had 9 pts so I could have improved further. My 2nd place standing seems much more solid now than it has recently. A good week works wonders for you.

Seems like my team has entered an especially down period here (over-reliance on Henry and Reyes I expect). But, we will be back!

yeah, I think you were 1 point ahead of me last week gspm. I picked up Reyes when Van N got suspended. He got me 4 points in two games. ugh. time for some more changes, methinks.

Throw the form book out for the Spurs game. WBA could well be on a new manager bounce, and Blues are nowhere near as bad as their league position indicates. In addition, Europe has shown EPL teams how to play Arsenal. Sit back, slow the game down, and they aren't half as effective.
posted by salmacis at 05:47 PM on November 09, 2004
Blues are nowhere near as bad as their league position indicates What? One goal from the last 5 games? Without Forssell they've got no strikeforce worthy of the name, and their midfield is currently woeful except defensively (good save by Muzzy Izzet on Saturday though, I was screaming "handball" at the telly for ten minutes). It's lucky for them that Crystal Palace (and yes, they are rubbish, it's only Andy Johnson who's keeping their hopes alive at the moment), West Brom, Blackburn and Southampton who are working hard to achieve the shitest team award in the premiership.
posted by BigCalm at 05:53 PM on November 09, 2004
Izzet tried to play keeper again today. Unlike last week, he didn't get away with it. Red card and penalty. Too bad it was Everton, not Liverpool, who benefited from that. And did we get enough goals today? 5-4 Arsenal, 3-2 Liverpool, 4-1 Chelsea, 4-0 Charlton? MAN!
posted by worldcup2002 at 02:26 PM on November 13, 2004
The Arsenal game was amazing. No goals at all for the first 37 minutes, then nine before the end and it seemed like they were coming every couple of minutes for a while; even Reyes put one in after looking mostly useless. Baros' second was a beaut, terrific combination play (I haven't seen Liverpool's third yet, we're only in the 65th minute on FSW) but we're probably lucky that Johnson couldn't play. Since Gerrard will be back next Saturday, who will be losing their spot? I'm thinking Traore sits with Riise moving back but maybe Hamann.
posted by billsaysthis at 03:38 PM on November 13, 2004
I don't think Reyes scored today. I only got 2 fantasy points for him. If Gerrard makes it back next week, they'll still need Hamann to play minder. My first thought was to bench Josemi, he seems to be struggling these last few matches. But who would go in his place? Interesting conundrum. If you set out the formation, it looks like Kewell may be the one to sit. He hasn't been convincing either, and I think Benitez likes Josemi more than Kewell. Kirkland Carragher, Josemi, Hyppia, Traore Hamann Gerrard, Alonso, Riise Garcia Baros We play Middlesborough next. Interestingly, Liverpool's B team beat their first team just this week in the Carling Cup. Maybe Benitez will play the young 'uns again. Ha.
posted by worldcup2002 at 09:46 PM on November 13, 2004
You're right about Reyes, of course, I was thinking of Pires who did score the last Gunner goal after coming on as a sub. About a minute after I was thinking that he's been mostly useless this season. Reyes scored a bunch early on but lately has been as responsible as any of them for the poor showings.

Fantasy scores are all well and good but much more important (for me) is that Liverpool win but without a real striker up front the question becomes who'll stick the ball in the net. Luis Garica was hot for awhile but has cooled off the last few weeks; maybe Gerrard will be determined to put his stamp on the team right off and make everyone remember why he's Numero Uno. We'll see Saturday.
posted by billsaysthis at 06:36 PM on November 18, 2004
That sucks for Baros, he was just starting to hit his stride. What other options do Liverpool have up top other than Luis Garcia now? Does this mean Kewell will be at striker. At least Gerrard is almost back.
posted by trox at 01:52 PM on November 19, 2004
Kewell has been playing as a striker for a while now. He's fine as a second striker, but not so much to lead the line. Same with Garcia.

SF, is Mellor that good? Who knows since he really hasn't gotten any substantial run outs other than the Carling Cup match against Boro where, of course, he scored twice. Given the current circumstances I would have played him yesterday or at least brought him on for the second half just to see what would happen. Especially since we need a result against Monaco Tuesday and I don't give keeping them off the scoreboard completely particularly good odds.

posted by squealy at 07:00 AM on November 22, 2004
Squealy I'll give you Melberg but Hislop is not showing as injured so even if he was why would the computer do the autosubbing for him? And I missed Melberg because he's showing as having earned one point (this is before the game started).
posted by billsaysthis at 03:02 PM on November 22, 2004
