I'm up to 33rd overall, and I've got the top points score in our league this week! Don't worry though, I've still got West Brom Players on my team - it's bound to go tits up sooner or later. Second highest points scorer this week was worldcup2002, but with everyone scoring similarly there hasn't been too much movement in the table. So, who's rushing out to buy Ruud then? (not me, I can't afford him)

BigC, what's your strategy to go top of the table from 33?

posted by billsaysthis at 11:27 AM on September 21, 2004

Good stuff, Calmy. I, unfortunately, have had to make an extra transfer this week due to unforeseen circumstances. But it should be a good move in the long term. Wow, only 5 (well, now it's 9) points between me and the top 3. I'm moving up this week! Top 3 or bust! btw, I kick ass.

posted by worldcup2002 at 11:55 AM on September 21, 2004

bastard, Big Calm. I'm a West Brom fan, and I don't have any of their players in my starting 11.

I think you accidentally typed "ck" instead of "ss" in that last sentence wc2002.

Errr, what about Hoult salmacis?

posted by squealy at 12:17 PM on September 21, 2004

Squealy, you probably need a new towel to wipe up all that fearful sweat, as you watch my inexorable rise to the top. You'll be kissing my ass when I move into third place next weekend. Hoohoo!

posted by worldcup2002 at 05:07 PM on September 21, 2004

whoa whoa whoa. i want a turn at the top since most of last year and this year i have been IN the top 3 to 5 spots but never actually #1. and in most of the spofi pools i seem to tbe good for a jaunt in the top spot before fading to high to mid level mediocrity. so get in line.

posted by gspm at 06:48 AM on September 22, 2004

gspm, I don't think you have anything to worry about. At least for another week.

And I agree w/ garfield, I'm just chuffed to see BigC in the top 50 leader table. Good on you. Now, let's all buck up our scores, and get more of us on that table too!

I'm moving into the top 40!

posted by StarFucker at 02:29 PM on September 24, 2004

It's looking hopeful this week 7. 17 points for me, with only half the team playing so far. All the players immediately above me faring slightly worse than I, and those below me who can catch me are only doing a little bit better. Also, my Liverpool are trouncing the Canaries. 17 shots on goal to their 1 in 60 minutes. 2-0 and looking like more to come. Also playing without that plonker Kewell. Seems to have helped to start Baros with Cisse. They even had Warnock start in place for Kewell and are playing 3-5-2 (!) with Alonso and Hamann anchoring Riise (good) and Warnock, and Garcia running rampant behind the strikers. Baros has scored, and so has Garcia! Points Points Points!

posted by worldcup2002 at 10:27 AM on September 25, 2004

Now Cisse has scored. And none of us (I'm talking the top 10) has him on our teams! Ha! And I was wrong. I now have 31 points. Hoohoohoo.

posted by worldcup2002 at 10:33 AM on September 25, 2004

Wrong again. I have 28 pts. And what the ... Okocha isn't even on team list today. Bwahhhhhhhhhhhh.

posted by worldcup2002 at 11:33 AM on September 25, 2004

Fuck my luck. I finally decide to buy Okocha and the daft twat gets groin strain in training. Anyone know how long he's due out for?

posted by squealy at 01:48 PM on September 26, 2004

Had the same fate, squealy. I didn't see any mention in Physioroom.com. My guess is it will work itself out quickly. But I don't know anything about groin strains. btw, I didn't quite make top 3 this week but I'll be there by next week. Oh yes.

posted by worldcup2002 at 02:30 PM on September 26, 2004

You could be right, I can feel a bit of drastic squad restructuring coming on.

I sold two players for this week. They both scored. oh well...

posted by sauril at 01:34 PM on September 27, 2004

And you better watch out worldcup! If I hadn't lost 4 points on my transfers last week we'd be tied.

posted by sauril at 01:35 PM on September 27, 2004

If I hadn't made the extra trade (for Okocha, who didn't play) because Gerrard got crocked, I'd be 8 pts ahead of you. HAH!

posted by worldcup2002 at 04:49 PM on September 27, 2004

btw, they haven't done all the substitutions for this gameweek yet. So I should be at least one more point to the good when that's done (once they sub Charlton in for Okocha). Woohoo.

posted by worldcup2002 at 04:53 PM on September 27, 2004

well, you got your extra point. but I got an extra 6! so there! :P Truth is though, we're all just playing in Big Calm's game now. he's still 40th overall!

posted by sauril at 01:47 PM on September 28, 2004

Lucky you, with Hreidarrson and Charlton's shutout. But you won't be so lucky this week.

posted by worldcup2002 at 02:10 PM on September 28, 2004

Ouch. Just took the points hit for a transfer to replace someone totally useless (I figure I'll more than make up the four points over a season, but it still will drop me a couple places in the table right now). Welcome to the top 5, wc2k2.

Interesting watching the sheep factor play it's part with regard to Rooney. 3,000 new owners in three hours. How I'll laugh when he's on the bench come Saturday. It could be a way to make some quick cash though.

And squealy, why would Rooney be on the bench? (asks the sheep) Aren't MU struggling offensively, somewhat? What am I missing?

posted by garfield at 08:36 AM on September 29, 2004

I always say, "get in on the ground floor of a sure thing." Actually, I incessantly say it.

posted by garfield at 08:38 AM on September 29, 2004

Rooney is still young and Fergie is likely to rotate him in and out, at least to start with - he'll probably play the big games but may get dropped for the less important games (mentioning no nam.. Birm... ahem). Having said that, he's a very very tempting buy at 10.1 mil. Very tempting. Mmmm, I can swap Reyes for Rooney and have 0.6mil in the bank, but I'll drop out of the top 50 if I do that (I've already used my transfer this week). What do I do?

BigCalm, thanks. I'm an infant when it comes to managerial tendencies in the EPL. right, ufez? neck 'n neck. this is the first week in several I'm not gonna get penalized for transfers. I bought Rooney for an even 10.0. ground floor, baby.

Oh, and the fact that Hasselbaink is apparently injured and won't feature at the weekend. You can't blame a sheep for trying.

posted by squealy at 06:59 PM on September 29, 2004

I've had a good think about it and I've decided that I'm going to steer clear of Rooney for the moment. His goalscoring last year was nothing special and it remains to be seen just how often he'll play.

I've had a good think about it and I've decided that I'm going to steer clear of Rooney for the moment. Heh heh... This just seems so funny.

posted by StarFucker at 02:30 PM on September 30, 2004

I'm just trying to earn a bit of money to buy a defender who plays in a team more consistently defensively sound than Upson. Rooney's performance in the FFL transfer market has been disappointing so far though: 19,236 transfers in and only a rise of £0.2m in value. Damn those crazy algorithms.

posted by squealy at 06:20 PM on September 30, 2004

Just made 5 transfers. Cost me 16 points. But you are all in trouble now!

posted by garfield at 05:23 PM on October 01, 2004

yeah squealy, I think that's the only weakness of this game - the player valuations are a bit too static. Mind you 19,000 transfers in out of around 330,000 players? That's only about 6%.

This week's going to be shite. Okocha has hobbled off injured again.

posted by squealy at 12:23 PM on October 02, 2004

You wouldn't fucking credit it would you? Okocha hobbles off injured. Hitzlsperger only plays 15 minutes, and my first sub Gera has just assisted and scored and won't even get off the bench for my FFL team. I'm off to the pub to get mullered.

posted by squealy at 12:54 PM on October 02, 2004

ahem, 9th for the time being (Terry and Lampard to come tomorrow). Thank god I resisted the temptation to swap Reyes with Rooney.

posted by BigCalm at 02:08 PM on October 02, 2004

Well, Mr Charlton over at Norwich scored today, racking up 7 points. He was my first sub, and won't be used. Unless Garcia doesn't start tomorrow, which is unlikely. I'm third, but hanging on by my fingernails, with four more games to play. And I only have Garcia to add more points. You better score a hattrick, Luis! btw, Calmy is 9th on the Leaderboard! Brilliant!
