SpoFi CD Swap update: (much more inside)

posted by Ufez Jones to navel gazing at 01:17 PM - 78 comments

Currently, I've got the following members signed up, complete with addys and proper names: goddam ufez dusted NoMich corpse yerfatma hootch salmacis Fat Buddha insomnyuk Samsonov14 rocketman garfield sashae chicobangs mkn Salmonberry If your name isn't there, it's b/c you haven't sent me an e-mail with all the vital vittles. You've got about 24 hours to do so, so hurry on up. smithers wants to play too, but with a cassette. If we can get 3-4 people to volunteer to be in his group, that'd be great. I haven't got access to a tape player anymore, myself. How long do we need to get these things out? We need to set a deadline of sorts for shipping. Suggestions welcome. Tomorrow afternoon/evening, I'll have the groups prepared and will send out pertinent info for your swappees. There will be 4-5 people per group (depending on the final number of people signed up - note, this number is debatable too, if there are problems with it). Questions and suggestions will be met with heartfelt gratitude and outright mockery.

Thanks for doing this Ufez. I don't have a cassette deck anymore, so count me out of that Ponzi Scheme.

posted by NoMich at 01:49 PM on June 21, 2004

July 1 would make a good deadline - easy to remember and gets them out ahead of the weekend.

posted by dusted at 02:24 PM on June 21, 2004

July 1's a bit early for me. I can pretty much promise you I'll be late.

posted by yerfatma at 03:32 PM on June 21, 2004

smithers wants to play too, but with a cassette. I can make mix tapes, but can receive whatever is more convenient/economical for you to make -- tape or CD -- so I would be a suitable group member particularly if you have a car with a cassette player in it.... (July 1 is also a little early for me....I am moving this weekend.)

posted by smithers at 03:35 PM on June 21, 2004

ufez, put me with smithers. i still have a tape deck, and have a tape to swap. other than that, you rock! 07/01/04 is cool, but whatever consensus i can accomodate.

posted by garfield at 04:01 PM on June 21, 2004

I'll take cassettes or CDs. Have tape deck, will travel.

posted by rocketman at 04:12 PM on June 21, 2004

Also, I'd prefer a deadline later than 7/1. My computer is still hosed, might not be ready by then.

posted by rocketman at 04:12 PM on June 21, 2004

The good news is that I can send CDs any time. The bad news is that my printer isn't working so you don't get the beautifully printed inlays. Also...I hope you like 70s prog...BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!

posted by salmacis at 04:43 PM on June 21, 2004

May I just add my thanks to Ufez for organising it. I don't mind a tape.

posted by Fat Buddha at 04:47 PM on June 21, 2004

thanks all for being accomodating, and thanks to Ufez for putting it all together.....

posted by smithers at 06:10 PM on June 21, 2004

I'm in, but I can't accept cassette tapes because I live IN THE FUTURE. For the record: In my time, nectarines have replaced peaches as the fruit metaphor of choice for writers who want to express beauty, sweetness, or a delicate and enticing fragrance. Also, we have giant cherries without pits that grow on what you would call "stop signs". They're delicious. Sadly, watermelons no longer exist. You can still plug a watermelon chip into your taste receptor plug, but somehow it's not the same. I probably shouldn't tell you this, but the Expos win the World Series three times in a row starting in 2008. Who knew? I hope I haven't altered history by letting the cat out of the bag here. Anyway, I'm looking forward to grokking the content of your musical compact discs.

posted by Samsonov14 at 01:19 AM on June 22, 2004

Yeah, I hate to say it, but I don't have a casette player available to me.

If we could get one more volunteer to accept a tape, all will be well. And we've topped out at a nice 20 participants. w00t!

posted by Ufez Jones at 10:56 AM on June 22, 2004

....okay then. To keep things square, we'll have five groups of four. Here they are, in no particular order. The Tape guys were put together, the rest are randomized via some Excel sorting silliness. Team Menudo smithers, Fat Buddha, rocketman, garfield Team Rick Astley yerfatma, mkn, salmacis, dusted Team Tito Jackson NoMich, goddam, jasonspaceman, billsaysthis Team Edgar Winters chicobangs, corpse, ufez, salmonberry Team Billy Ray Cyrus sashae, Samsonov14, hootch, insomnyuk e-mails complete with the addies for your group will go out tonight, sometime after I go see Control Room. Sorry this is so late, I've been rather busy today.

since im kind of a music hog, i'd like to hear what everyone has to offer, shite or not. if one extra mailing won't break the bank i'd be more than willing to ship out my selections to you, the spofi listener, as well. check my profile for details...and no, i won't wail and grind my teeth if no one takes me up on this offer.

posted by garfield at 05:03 PM on June 22, 2004

I'd take you up after this all goes down. This offer assumes I ever get my shit together.

I'm just sad Team Malcolm Jamal Warner didn't make the cut into the league.

Tito roolz, you foolz! Gimme the bling. Note that my burning will not occur for one week plus a couple of days since I am heading out of town until next Monday night. You have been served, sirs and madams.

Rick Astley? I had to google search "Rick Astley" and now I'm listening to MP3 clips from his website. It's so bad it's good. I know you wanna leave me, but I refuse to let you go If I have to beg... plead... for your sympathy... We rock.

posted by dusted at 06:43 PM on June 22, 2004

You're off the motherfucking team, dusted. Just kidding. I'm never going to give you up. We'll be together forever. And never to part.

posted by yerfatma at 07:15 PM on June 22, 2004

So we send one CD to each member of the team?

posted by mkn at 08:44 PM on June 22, 2004

Off the team? I should be team captain for this discovery! It's so bad it makes me want to cry for help. Too bad, yerfatma - I guess I'm gonna have to learn to live (without your love).

posted by dusted at 09:07 PM on June 22, 2004

Made what discovery? Rick had a huge summer around about when I was 12 and I never forgot that blue-eyed soul devil.

posted by yerfatma at 09:24 PM on June 22, 2004

bill, if i'm feeling motivated this week i may have a cd for you to take back to cali.

posted by goddam at 09:29 PM on June 22, 2004

dusted, I am going to write you a script for 50mg of "I Love the 80s". After you finish that, start this new script of "I Love the 80s Strikes Back". Please finish both prescriptions completely. I can't believe you didn't know Rick Astley!

posted by jerseygirl at 09:49 PM on June 22, 2004

I thought Astley would hang around onger than he did, he has a great white soul voice, but material is everything. Goddam that would be whack.

posted by billsaysthis at 10:38 PM on June 22, 2004

okay, e-mails should be sent to everyone. Let me know if you don't get yours by morning (this is my first time to futz around with multiple addresses in one e-mail using gmail, but I think I got it right). Happy swapping! (and yes, mkn, like a mix tape, but on CD!)

posted by Ufez Jones at 10:53 PM on June 22, 2004

Is the same CD to every member of the group recommended, or should each one be as unique as a snowflake? Remember kids, Sudanese mouth harp = new hotness.

posted by sashae at 11:27 PM on June 22, 2004

Unless you've got a lot more time (and music) than I do, sasha, I'd go same mix to each member. However, if this becomes a more than one-time thing, I'd recommend making a new mix for each go-round.

posted by Ufez Jones at 11:37 PM on June 22, 2004

Hmm, ok. I'll work on keeping it to a single disc then ;) I've got serious music issues... somewhere around 1200+ CDs and 1000+ vinyl, plus more mp3 than one could shake a proverbial (or digital) stick at. OCD sucks.

posted by sashae at 12:00 AM on June 23, 2004

he has a great white soul voice Ya don't hear those words too often.

posted by justgary at 12:04 AM on June 23, 2004

Done and done. 20 tracks of PURE DAMN GENIUS. This stuff is fun.

posted by sashae at 01:38 AM on June 23, 2004

So we send one CD to each member of the team? ...except yourself, cos that would be silly... I think I'm actually going to put a song co-written by Rick Astley on my mix now. He collaborated with Fish on the Raingods With Zippos album.

posted by salmacis at 04:27 AM on June 23, 2004

My mixes will go out this coming Monday. This will be a great diversion from painting the dining room and kitchen.

posted by jasonspaceman at 08:48 AM on June 23, 2004

Also, a thought. It'd be nice for everyone to post their tracklists here after everything's been shipped out... I'd like to see what people like outside of our group. -s

posted by sashae at 09:18 AM on June 23, 2004

I can't believe you didn't know Rick Astley! I blame my parents.

bill, if you happen to find yourself on the Pulaski skyway, roll down your window and let me know what flavor you'd bestow on the aroma.

posted by garfield at 11:47 AM on June 24, 2004

Mine are burned as well, but my printer is shot... so all you get are tray liners, no cover. If you have a fancy shmancy printer, I can send you a link to the 1500x1500.jpg for the cover ;) Cut and insert your own! -s

posted by sashae at 12:05 PM on June 24, 2004

Mine are ready to burn, and should be rockin' like Dokken come the top of next week. I never realized how much Sri Lankan Death Metal I had until I put it all in one place.

sashae: That's what I'm going to have to do as well, unless I can get this sodding printer to accept a sheet of paper instead of blinking stupidly at me.

posted by salmacis at 05:41 PM on June 24, 2004

Damn chico I am not on your team and I've been searching everywhere for that Sri Lanka headbangin' shizznit! Oh well, my loss. See how quickly I got over it?

bill, my friend, you are Zen. As. Fuck.

posted by chicobangs at 12:22 AM on June 25, 2004

I got my goddam CD this afternoon, you pack of losers. Let's just say this is a coup for the Tito Jacksons cause it's a monster. Kinks, Louis Prima, Concrete Blonde, Rufus Wainwright and, of course, Tom Waits (but not Jersey Girl). Dazzling diversity. And when my CD arrives you non-Titos will be salivating in sadness.

posted by billsaysthis at 05:19 PM on June 25, 2004

Yah, just you wait until you get my Team Tito CD. You'll also be saying, "Twink rules the fucking universe!"

posted by NoMich at 06:50 PM on June 25, 2004

what goddam Rufus Wainwright song? can I have a goddam tracklist for that goddam cd compilation?

posted by jerseygirl at 07:30 PM on June 25, 2004

glad you liked the selections bill. and it was nice to meet you and vivian. enjoy the rest of your stay.

posted by goddam at 08:24 PM on June 25, 2004

Lou Bega was underrated in his talent, and I expect my CD to rectify that. Go team Winters!

posted by Salmonberry at 01:02 AM on June 26, 2004

JG, you didn't sign up for the swap, now you need to suffer in silence ;) (Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk) g, we were very happy to meet you too--when you come to Cali we can get more of the SpoFites together, but not in Redding. Just hoping we can survive my mom's nerves in the run up to tonight's nuptials, by tomorrow everything should be fine.

posted by billsaysthis at 10:42 AM on June 26, 2004

the rest of team Tito's cds were sent today.

posted by goddam at 09:56 PM on June 29, 2004

Ok, my swap isn't done yet, I still have 2 hours of music that I am trying to pare down, as well as working full time and various other projects. Soon tho, I shall be finished.

posted by insomnyuk at 12:18 AM on June 30, 2004

I pulled about 37 songs together last night and am now going to figure out how to do the burning. If anyone has a better suggestion (running on Windows XP) than MusicMatch Jukebox 8.2 Basic, feel free to let me know.

posted by billsaysthis at 11:37 AM on June 30, 2004

37 songs on one disc? My discs are now going out tomorrow, once I get all of this paint off of me.

posted by jasonspaceman at 01:02 PM on June 30, 2004

Mine went out a little late, on Monday, but they should be arriving on your doorsteps soon.

posted by corpse at 01:33 PM on June 30, 2004

I'm not saying all of them will end up on the final release, that's just the main cut.

posted by billsaysthis at 04:12 PM on June 30, 2004

posted by corpse at 01:31 PM on July 03, 2004

I got mine from goddam, but that was when we hooked up a week ago. Not hooked up hooked up but when we met in person for lunch and tour of the Newark Museum. With my wife. Honestly I am having some weird problem with Nero burning the CD on both my PC and my wife's. Got to have my personal IT department come over this afternoon and try to figure things out. Plus, why doesn't Nero have an export track list to some kind of file function? Cheap ass free software!

posted by billsaysthis at 02:09 PM on July 03, 2004

i'm telling ya bill, itunes is your friend.

posted by goddam at 06:18 PM on July 03, 2004

Okay, I solved this with Nero, which I forgot was already installed. Printing case labels now, nothing fancy (or even as nice as yours, goddam) but completely functional.

posted by billsaysthis at 06:55 PM on July 03, 2004

FYI, I found this little shareware app called cdrLabel that seems to do a nice, but not great, job on the printing part. Automatically, using freedb, can pick up the track information from a CD but for whatever reason doesn't offer the option of putting in artist name for each track, had to do that manually. But better than using MS Word.

NoMich, thanks for the very cool CD. Was there a theme or connection that went woosh over my head?

posted by billsaysthis at 08:08 PM on July 12, 2004

No, not really. I've never had a theme to any of my mix tapes. Just whatever hits me at the moment. Yeah, I just don't see how Brewer & Shipley can have any connection to to A Certain Ratio. Except that they are great songs.

posted by NoMich at 10:38 PM on July 12, 2004

posted by billsaysthis at 05:37 PM on July 13, 2004

well, we have his address and i'll be about 2 hours away from there when i'm on vacation next week. i can bust some doors down if necessary.

posted by goddam at 06:02 PM on July 13, 2004

shit, i only live 15 minutes away. i've been digitizing a large chunk my library, so that's my excuse for the delay. but, aside from my procrastin', i have a confession to make. I don't have a good old mix tape to send...the quality is just shite on the one i had in mind, so i'll be sending a mix cd with a tape to dub, if you so choose. I also have a second confession to make. I don't have access to a printer, so i'll email the cd cover/track list. oh yeah, i've really enjoyed the two cds i've received already. you know who you are.

posted by garfield at 07:01 PM on July 13, 2004

If people want to email me the electronic copies of their mix's track list I will be glad to make a webpage for it so people in the other groups can ooh and ahh. My email is bill at the domain in my profile, but please send plain text and not HTML or Word files.
