SpoFi CD Swap update: (much more inside)

Thanks for doing this Ufez. I don't have a cassette deck anymore, so count me out of that Ponzi Scheme.

July 1 would make a good deadline - easy to remember and gets them out ahead of the weekend.

July 1's a bit early for me. I can pretty much promise you I'll be late.
posted by yerfatma at 03:32 PM on June 21, 2004
smithers wants to play too, but with a cassette. I can make mix tapes, but can receive whatever is more convenient/economical for you to make -- tape or CD -- so I would be a suitable group member particularly if you have a car with a cassette player in it.... (July 1 is also a little early for me....I am moving this weekend.)
posted by smithers at 03:35 PM on June 21, 2004
ufez, put me with smithers. i still have a tape deck, and have a tape to swap. other than that, you rock! 07/01/04 is cool, but whatever consensus i can accomodate.
posted by garfield at 04:01 PM on June 21, 2004
I'll take cassettes or CDs. Have tape deck, will travel.
posted by rocketman at 04:12 PM on June 21, 2004
Also, I'd prefer a deadline later than 7/1. My computer is still hosed, might not be ready by then.
posted by rocketman at 04:12 PM on June 21, 2004
The good news is that I can send CDs any time. The bad news is that my printer isn't working so you don't get the beautifully printed inlays. Also...I hope you like 70s prog...BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!

May I just add my thanks to Ufez for organising it. I don't mind a tape.

thanks all for being accomodating, and thanks to Ufez for putting it all together.....

I'm in, but I can't accept cassette tapes because I live IN THE FUTURE. For the record: In my time, nectarines have replaced peaches as the fruit metaphor of choice for writers who want to express beauty, sweetness, or a delicate and enticing fragrance. Also, we have giant cherries without pits that grow on what you would call "stop signs". They're delicious. Sadly, watermelons no longer exist. You can still plug a watermelon chip into your taste receptor plug, but somehow it's not the same. I probably shouldn't tell you this, but the Expos win the World Series three times in a row starting in 2008. Who knew? I hope I haven't altered history by letting the cat out of the bag here. Anyway, I'm looking forward to grokking the content of your musical compact discs.

Yeah, I hate to say it, but I don't have a casette player available to me.

....okay then. To keep things square, we'll have five groups of four. Here they are, in no particular order. The Tape guys were put together, the rest are randomized via some Excel sorting silliness. Team Menudo smithers, Fat Buddha, rocketman, garfield Team Rick Astley yerfatma, mkn, salmacis, dusted Team Tito Jackson NoMich, goddam, jasonspaceman, billsaysthis Team Edgar Winters chicobangs, corpse, ufez, salmonberry Team Billy Ray Cyrus sashae, Samsonov14, hootch, insomnyuk e-mails complete with the addies for your group will go out tonight, sometime after I go see Control Room. Off the team? I should be team captain for this discovery! It's so bad it makes me want to cry for help. Too bad, yerfatma - I guess I'm gonna have to learn to live (without your love).

dusted, I am going to write you a script for 50mg of "I Love the 80s". After you finish that, start this new script of "I Love the 80s Strikes Back". Please finish both prescriptions completely. I can't believe you didn't know Rick Astley!
posted by jerseygirl at 09:49 PM on June 22, 2004
I thought Astley would hang around onger than he did, he has a great white soul voice, but material is everything. Goddam that would be whack.

okay, e-mails should be sent to everyone. Let me know if you don't get yours by morning (this is my first time to futz around with multiple addresses in one e-mail using gmail, but I think I got it right). Happy swapping! (and yes, mkn, like a mix tape, but on CD!)
posted by Ufez Jones at 10:53 PM on June 22, 2004
Is the same CD to every member of the group recommended, or should each one be as unique as a snowflake? Remember kids, Sudanese mouth harp = new hotness.
posted by sashae at 11:27 PM on June 22, 2004
Unless you've got a lot more time (and music) than I do, sasha, I'd go same mix to each member. However, if this becomes a more than one-time thing, I'd recommend making a new mix for each go-round.
posted by Ufez Jones at 11:37 PM on June 22, 2004
Hmm, ok. I'll work on keeping it to a single disc then ;) I've got serious music issues... somewhere around 1200+ CDs and 1000+ vinyl, plus more mp3 than one could shake a proverbial (or digital) stick at. OCD sucks.

I got my goddam CD this afternoon, you pack of losers. Let's just say this is a coup for the Tito Jacksons cause it's a monster. Kinks, Louis Prima, Concrete Blonde, Rufus Wainwright and, of course, Tom Waits (but not Jersey Girl). Dazzling diversity. And when my CD arrives you non-Titos will be salivating in sadness.

I got mine from goddam, but that was when we hooked up a week ago. Not hooked up hooked up but when we met in person for lunch and tour of the Newark Museum. With my wife. Honestly I am having some weird problem with Nero burning the CD on both my PC and my wife's. Got to have my personal IT department come over this afternoon and try to figure things out. Plus, why doesn't Nero have an export track list to some kind of file function? Cheap ass free software!
posted by billsaysthis at 02:09 PM on July 03, 2004
Okay, I solved this with Nero, which I forgot was already installed. Printing case labels now, nothing fancy (or even as nice as yours, goddam) but completely functional.
posted by billsaysthis at 06:55 PM on July 03, 2004
FYI, I found this little shareware app called cdrLabel that seems to do a nice, but not great, job on the printing part. Automatically, using freedb, can pick up the track information from a CD but for whatever reason doesn't offer the option of putting in artist name for each track, had to do that manually. But better than using MS Word.

NoMich, thanks for the very cool CD. Was there a theme or connection that went woosh over my head?
posted by billsaysthis at 08:08 PM on July 12, 2004
No, not really. I've never had a theme to any of my mix tapes. Just whatever hits me at the moment. Yeah, I just don't see how Brewer & Shipley can have any connection to to A Certain Ratio. Except that they are great songs.

well, we have his address and i'll be about 2 hours away from there when i'm on vacation next week. i can bust some doors down if necessary.
posted by goddam at 06:02 PM on July 13, 2004
shit, i only live 15 minutes away. i've been digitizing a large chunk my library, so that's my excuse for the delay. but, aside from my procrastin', i have a confession to make. I don't have a good old mix tape to send...the quality is just shite on the one i had in mind, so i'll be sending a mix cd with a tape to dub, if you so choose. I also have a second confession to make. I don't have access to a printer, so i'll email the cd cover/track list. oh yeah, i've really enjoyed the two cds i've received already. you know who you are.
posted by garfield at 07:01 PM on July 13, 2004
If people want to email me the electronic copies of their mix's track list I will be glad to make a webpage for it so people in the other groups can ooh and ahh. My email is bill at the domain in my profile, but please send plain text and not HTML or Word files.

You've got about 24 hours to do so, so hurry on up. smithers wants to play too, but with a cassette. If we can get 3-4 people to volunteer to be in his group, that'd be great. I haven't got access to a tape player anymore, myself. How long do we need to get these things out? We need to set a deadline of sorts for shipping. Suggestions welcome. Tomorrow afternoon/evening, I'll have the groups prepared and will send out pertinent info for your swappees. There will be 4-5 people per group (depending on the final number of people signed up - note, this number is debatable too, if there are problems with it). Questions and suggestions will be met with heartfelt gratitude and outright mockery.
