And thus began the SpoFi Wiki (what's a Wiki?) I tossed it together pretty hastily, so please feel free to edit anything that seems loquacious or stumbly. Also, add add add and it can become the source for all questions SpoFi. Do note that the formatting of linkage and text alteration in Wiki is far different from your standard html. It's not difficult by any means, but html won't work. I'm not sure if more than one person can edit at a time, so it may be a good idea, at least initially, if you would comment here that you were editing and then comment again when you're done. Enjoy.

Guide for newcomers, FAQ, and editing help, for those that are completely lost.

Just a suggestion: The main page should just be an index. So instead of listing all the interviews, we have a link to "SpoFi Interviews" and on that page, we have the list of interviews. Suggested indexes: Extended History of SpoFi (if someone wants to write it) Interviews (like what is on the main page now) Contributors List (everyone that has added something to the wiki can add themselves to the contributors page (and link to their own Wiki page if they made one)) Fantasy League Results (not necessarily a link to each result, but a winners list and brief comment if necessary) Sports league links (an index of the good wiki pages for all the major sports leagues (and teams)) Fightin' Words (a list of topics that is just about guaranteed to lead to arguments...not to suggest people don't discuss them, but sort of a humourous reference) And maybe we should have a rule that the main page can only be edited by one or two specific people (like Ufez Jones and..uh...justgary (off the top of my head)). You can create your own SpoFi Wiki pages and post a message saying that you want it linked to the main page (or index pages).

I like it grum. Now get to work, minions... Just kidding. I'll do the links to Leagues one this afternoon or tomorrow morning, depending on work-stuffs. Oh and if the pantheon could put this in the sidebar, that'd be peachy.

Nicely done, Ufez. One suggestion: I think there should be a picture of me fighting a killer whale at the top of the page. Or maybe me using kung-fu against the world's strongest midget. Or maybe me helping several eskimos build a boat. Your call. Any one of those would do, or you could explain the purpose of the lockerroom under the link. Plus, a picture of me throwing peanuts at a charging elephant.

posted by Samsonov14 at 10:21 PM on March 24, 2004

Excellent idea Ufez. We could just point new users to the spofi wiki to get up to speed. I'm also sure no one would have a problem with putting a link on the about page or somewhere similar. And maybe we should have a rule that the main page can only be edited by one or two specific people (like Ufez Jones and..uh...justgary (off the top of my head)). If you decide to do this I think its more interesting with regular members being in charge, maybe long time members (for instance: Ufez and Grum@work? ;-). Not to sound cheesy, but its the posters who make the site, so why not the wiki? I think some of the posters here know as much about the site/history than any of the founders. Interviews, fanatasy leagues, ask spofi, etc, have all been member originated and member run ideas. Even the wiki itself is member created.

posted by justgary at 11:12 PM on March 24, 2004

i'd suggest not limiting who can edit the main page since: 1. it really goes against the idea of an open source document to say it is hands off to everyone but a few 2. as far as i know there is nothing to stop some non-spofi person to surf their way onto the spofi pages and change whatever info they feel like. if the net at large won't accept a velvet rope around the spofi wiki mainpage then the people of spofi shouldn't have to. that said it would be nice to think that any editing of the mainpage will be constructive rather than silly.

I daren't touch the Wiki in case I break it again. But, on the resources page, it says one of the most discussed sports is English Football League. We actually spend far more time discussing the FA Premier League.

posted by squealy at 12:20 PM on March 25, 2004

Hmm, after doing some research, it appears that not only are we controversial, but that we may be better off having our own Wiki hosted on SpoFi (like http://www.sportsfilter.com/Wiki - I have no idea how to do that though. You may want to ask riffola, as I believe he set up the MeFi wiki). These people make MetaTalk look downright civil. Appear to be quite anal too.

posted by Ufez Jones at 12:26 PM on March 25, 2004

if the Pantheon doesn't want a wiki on sportsfilter.com, i'd be willing to host an install one of these (or any open source wiki that'll run in a LAMP environment) for free. (i think, of the two, the first project looks the simplest and best.) i'd even pay to register spofiwiki.com (at the least the first year).

posted by danostuporstar at 12:45 PM on March 25, 2004

actually, upon further review, the latter of the two, phpwiki, seems better.

Delete, and look seriously at SportsFilter. This series of articles promotes a particular weblog site which claims 1,000 members. So, do we also list every Yahoo group as soon as its membership hits 1,000? How about individual usenet groups? They done smackdowned us good...

Other links include red-broken-links and a copyvio or two Well, technically it's no "copyvio's" not one, and definitely not two. But why let the facts get in the way of your feeble, self-important attempts to be an internet policeman? I bet he was fondling himself when he wrote that.

Beh, fuck 'em. I sent the guy that posted the complaint initially a polite e-mail telling him that they can go ahead and delete those and we'll build and host our own, which is probably a better way to go anyways. If nothing else, there is at least one site that will host non-commercial Wiki's for free so long as they're updated at least once per 30 days. I'd still rather have it onsite, but if worse comes to worst, we've got options. I definitely think this could be a valuable resource for old and new members alike though, and I'm still willing to help do some of the grunt work involved to make it happen.

posted by danostuporstar at 02:58 PM on March 25, 2004

No, sorry, dano. You have to become a registered member of wikipedia with a certifiable e-mail addy before you can e-mail one of the members or post in the bend them over and give 'em hell correction forums. That looks good, dano. Thanks for working on that. I wonder if any of the pantheon would consider uploading this onto the SpoFi server?

wiki wankers begone. set up an independent one. this should be by the spofi people for the spofi community and not by/for/near folks who are more interested in sharing and editing knowledge about the wintering habits of the marmoset.

posted by gspm at 04:55 PM on March 25, 2004

A great resource for information on marmosets is Paul's Marmoset Page. That guy sure knows his marmosets. And I'd be happy to help with any Spofi-hosted wikipedia dealie. I'm unemployed right now, and spend most of my free time helping eskimos build boats. But I've got some time to spare.

ok, i'm pulling the trigger. unless someone suggests a better alternative in the next hour, i'm registering spofiwiki.com. the dns should go thru by monday, but i'll post an temp IP for the meantime. Ufez, Samsonov, whoever send me an email (from the address on yr sportsfilter profile) and i'll reply with the admin user/pass, which can also be used for FTP purposes. i can also set up an area where people who want to post pics on spofi can do so w/o worrying about stealing some other site's bandwidth.

wikifilter: so i log in... there's no password... what stops someone else as logging in as me?

posted by jerseygirl at 10:19 AM on March 26, 2004

nothing but the goodwill of the community and anybody's ability to edit whatever nasty people post as you. it's not like a *filter site where part of what you are doing is building yr identity. yr name is not even displayed by the info, people have to actively seek who posted what if that's what they care about...it's more about fast free-form sharing of info. (at least in my very limited understanding of wiki.) http authentication is an option with phpwiki, but then creation and maintainence of the password file becomes an issue (as phpwiki provides no built-in facility for this).

And fwiw, I did receive a polite reply from the guy at wikipedia that I sent an e-mail to. He even invited me to stick around and contribute if I wished. I also have to fess up that this is the first thread in which I've realized that it's danostuporstar, not danosuperstar. Sheesh.

Okay, I've added a bunch of things to the new SpoFiWiki:

  • A link to a SpoFi Fantasy League page. Please add/correct/delete to match existing/past SpoFi leagues. The pages for the individual leagues should contain at least a record of the winner in that league/year. If someone has recorded the final standings/points that league and wants to post them in there, even better.
  • Fixed the sports reference page to remove the extra [ symbols. We don't need them for this version of wiki it seems.
  • Created the Major League Baseball reference page. If people have more links they want to add there, even better. Hopefully people will step up and add information/links to the other resource pages. I really think they could be very useful for everyone.
  • Add my own page so that a link to it works for the interview page.
  • Added a page for MetaFilter and "the other site".

Very nice. I added MLS and UEFA CL sections to the Fantasy Leagues page.

yay grum!!! ok, it's official:

spofiwiki.com is in business
please do not post any more links to the qorg.org/wiki page. i've set up Ufez and Samsonov as site admins, but i've instructed them to share the wealth with other spofos if they want. (not that an admin can really do much more than a non-admin, it is wiki after all.) i've also posted a ToDo page. if you wanna help, please check in there and post notes about what yr doing. or if you have ideas for new stuff, post that too.

Sign in (with any id). Search for "billsaysthis" (or whatever you want). When it says "no matches" click on the question mark and it will take you a blank edit page for that search. Create at will.
